Titans ownership changes mind, Fisher won’t return

After the recently completed NFL regular-season, the Tennessee Titans announced that head coach Jeff Fisher would be returning for 2011.

But in a mind-boggling, shocking move, the team parted ways with the popular Fisher, the franchise’s coach since 1994, when it was the Houston Oilers.

Fisher, who put in 16 years with the franchise, was on track to coach the final year of his contract and be paid $6.5 million.

There had been a power struggle between controversial quarterback Vince Young and Jeff Fisher when the coach benched him early in the season.

After the season, Titans owner Bud Adams said he was on Fisher’s side, but changed his mind this week.

Fisher, a USC alumnus and former NFL player, was promoted from defensive coordinator to interim coach with six games left in the 1994 season.

The 52-year-old Fisher, compiled a 147-126 record with the Titans and Oilers including postseason. He won four division titles and made the playoffs six times. His 1999 team, led by the late Steve McNair at quarterback, lost to the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl.

Fisher has coached more NFL games for one franchise than all but six Hall of Fame coaches: George Halas, Tom Landry, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Curly Lambeau and Bud Grant. He ranks third among active coaches in career wins, behind only Bill Belichick (176) and Mike Shanahan (160) and he is 20th all-time in coaching wins.
