Former heavyweight boxing contender Ron Lyle, who fought Muhammad Ali for the title in 1975 and later took on George Foreman, died in Denver on Saturday at age 70.

The Dayton, Ohio native lost to both Ali and Foreman in the mid-1970′s.

Ron McKinney, a family friend, said that Lyle died from complications from a sudden stomach ailment.

McKinney hired Lyle to start the Salvation Army’s boxing program in 2002.

After retiring from pro boxing, Lyle lived in Las Vegas where he trained young boxers and worked as a security guard.

Lyle, who was 6’3, made a brief comeback at age 54 but it was short-lived.

Lyle had a very impressive record: 51 fights, 43 wins, 31 wins by knockout, 7 losses and 1 draw.
