The Ohio State men’s volleyball team won their first national championship with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9 in the finals at Penn State University.

Shawn Sangrey, a junior from Columbia, Pennsylvania, had a career-high 30 kills, the last three coming in the final moments of the fifth set. Then, senior setter Steve Kehoe leaped to block UCSB All-American Jeff Menzel’s last shot at keeping the Gauchos alive, and the third-seeded Buckeyes walked off with the title.

Ohio State (26-6) made its 18th trip to the final four and its third appearance in the title game.

Sangrey, was very elated playing on the court where he won two high school state titles.

UCSB advanced to the title game by knocking off #1 USC.

Ohio State men’s volleyball setter Steven Kehoe has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Week.

Named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, he directed the Ohio State offense to wins over #3 seed Penn State (24-7), 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23), in the semifinals and #4 seed UC Santa Barbara (18-15), 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-29, 22-25, 15-9) to win the program’s first national championship.

Against the Nittany Lions, Kehoe had 51 assists, six digs and five blocks guiding the Buckeyes to a .292 attack percentage. In the match against the Gauchos, he recorded a season-high 65 assists adding nine digs to help OSU hit .329 for the championship win.

In the two matches, Kehoe averaged 12.89 assists, 1.67 digs and 0.78 blocks per set.

This is the 13th time an Ohio State player has been named an AVCA Player of the Week, with this being Kehoe’s second honor.

Turner has an “off’ night; Buckeyes roll behind Diebler and Buford’s shooting

compiled by staff and wire reports

Dallas Lauderdale Ohio State (osu)

Jon Diebler Ohio State (osu)

Evan Turner proved that he is human and can have an “off” night. The Buckeyes have proven all season that they are not a one-man team and can win games without Turner scoring 20 or 30 points and if he’s injured.

Ohio State jumped on the backs of Jon Diebler and William Buford and the defensive prowess of Dallas Lauderdale, for a 68-51 victory over pesky and persistent California-Santa Barbara in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.

Diebler scored 23 points and Lauderdale blocked a career-high eight shots and grabbed 12 rebounds for the #2 seeded Buckeyes who up their record to 28-7.

Diebler’s play was very impressive due in part that spent the whole week fighting off symtoms of the flu.

Turner scored only nine points on 2-of 13 shooting from the floor. He did pull down 10 rebounds. He seemed to have trouble playing against the Gauchos matchup zone defense.

The Buckeyes advanced to play Sunday against the number 10 seed Georgia Tech, who upset seventh-seeded Oklahoma State 64-59 on Friday.

Orlando Johnson scored 20 points for the number 15 seed UC Santa Barbara, who end the season at 20-10.
