NFL MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: 49ers hang with Saints, but can’t pull upset; lose 25-22

New Orleans place kicker Garrett Hartley launched a 37-yard field goal that barely clearly the crossbar as time ran out giving the Saints a 25-22 victory over the upset-minded San Francisco 49ers in San Francisco.

The winning field goal try was possible by a pass from Drew Brees to Marques Colston covering 30 yards.

The 49ers Frank Gore rushed for 112 yards on 20 carries.

It was Gore who scored on a 7-yard touchdown with 1:19 left in regulation and Vernon Davis made a close-call catch at the goal-line for the tying two-point conversion. The play was initially called no good by the referees, but San Francisco challenged the ruling and video-tape replays showed the 49ers were right and the two-point conversion was good.

No problem for the 2-0 Saints, who got the ball back and started to drive from their 30-yard line with 1:14 left. Brees hit Colston with a pass that put the Saints on the San Francisco 18 with 18 seconds left.

Drew Brees completed 28 of 38 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.

The Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints will get an early test when they host the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL season opener, a rematch of their thrilling NFC title game which was decided in overtime.

The nationally televised game will be Thursday night September 9. New Orleans won its first conference title by beating Minnesota 31-28 on a 40-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley 4:45 into overtime. The Saints went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in the Super Bowl.

Also in announcing the 2010 schedule, the NFL has added a little quirk to the schedule.

In an effort to make late-season games more meaningful and to stop teams from sitting out regular players once they have clinched a playoff spot, the NFL has set up all intradivision matchups for the final Sunday January 2, 2011.
