HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Columbus Academy beats Berne Union in Division III action

Columbus Academy, the co-champion of the Mid-State Ohio Division with Newark Catholic, is on a roll in the OHSAA tournament.

They defeated Cardington in the first round and on Wednesday night, they eliminated Berne Union, 63-44 in a Division III game at Grove City Central Crossing.

Zach Ratcliff reached a milestone in his high school career during game, scoring his 1,000th point.

Ratcliff, who’ll be playing baseball at Ohio State next year, led the Vikings with 24 points and 12 rebounds for the second-seeded team from Gahanna, Ohio.

Daniel Aronowitz supported Ratcliff with 17 points.

OSU tennis star Buchanan earns Big Ten honor

The Ohio State men’s tennis team is fourth-ranked in the country and one of the reasons is the play of Chase Buchanan.

For the second time this season, Buchanan, a junior, has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week.

Buchanan (15-4) won four matches last week in wins against #24 North Carolina and #5 Texas.

The Gahanna, Ohio native added to his wins total at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship February 18-20 in Seattle, Washington.

The Bexley Lions defeated Academy on January 21 in Bexley, 76-72.

The Lions are 10-9, 6-7 in the MSL Ohio Division. They have one of the best players in the area in 6’4 Jalen Robinette.

In their last game, they lost to Licking Valley, 42-38.

Columbus Academy comes into the game after winning their last two games, 70-57 against Licking Valley and 63-49 over Lakewood.

The Vikings are in third place in the Ohio Division with a 13-5, 9-4.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. with the pre-game getting started at 7:15 from Gahanna, Ohio.

High School Bounce continues with Saturday night action from Gahanna Ohio, as we bring you Mid-State League, Ohio Division action, as Licking Valley visits Columbus Academy.

The Panthers of Licking Valley, come into the game in 7th place in the division with a record of 5-11, 3-8. They lost to Whitehall on February 8, 72-59.

Columbus Academy is in 2nd place with a record of 11-5, 7-4. In their most recent game on February 8, the Vikings beat the division’s top team, the Granville Aces, 77-62 at home. Granville is 11-4, 9-2.

Megasportsnews.com broadcasted its second high school basketball game of the season Saturday night as Hebron Lakewood was taking on Columbus Academy in Gahanna, Ohio.

The two schools, members of the Mid-State League Ohio Division, which also includes: Bexley, Granville, Heath, Licking Valley, Newark Catholic and Whitehall.

The Lancers of Lakewood came into the game having a miserable season at 0-9 overall, 0-5 in the league.

The Columbus Academy Vikings hit the hardwood with a 6-3 record, 2-2 in the league.

From the outset of the game, Academy dominated all aspects in route to a 66-50 win.

Academy jumped out quickly at 11-0 when Lakewood took a timeout at 4:36 of the first quarter. The quarter finally ended with the Vikings up 19-7, forcing the Lancers into 10 turnovers in the first quarter using a full court press mixed in with various zone defenses.

Getting off to a bad start was not the only bad omen for the Lancers, their top player Ross Watts, got into early foul trouble and never scored a point and only took two shots the entire game.

Columbus Academy cruised from their, leading 32-17 at the half, 58-33 at the end the three and the final of 66-50.

The Vikings defensively forced 19 turnovers and only committed 10 themselves. They clearly had a height advantage and played at a quicker pace which affected the smaller Lancers.

Academy had balanced scoring in the victory.

Daniel Aronowitz scored 15 points to lead the way. Zach Ratcliff, who was the ohcsports.com Player of the Game for Academy had 14 points. Austin Peterman added 11 and Tim Eldridge chipped in with 10.

The Lakewood Lancers were led by reserve forward/center Joe Cramer, who was selected as their ohcsports.com Player of the Game. Brandon Haggerty added 13 and Austen Morgan scored 12.
