The Cincinnati Reds will be playing on a new grass surface in 2012 at Great American Ball Park.

Hamilton County, which owns the Reds’ home stadium, spent $1.53 million to replace the playing surface at both Great American and the Bengals’ Paul Brown Stadium.

The new playing surface is part of a plan to repair or replace equipment at the ballpark.

The money comes from a repair account which is replenished each year by the county with a $1 million. The Great American Ball Park account according to the county has around $3.5 million.

The Reds current lease signed in 2003 with Hamilton County, has the Reds paying for routine maintenance and repairs, while the county pays for capital improvements and replacements at GABP.
