2010 SHERATON HAWAII BOWL: Explosive Tulsa Hurricanes embarass Hawaii on its home turf

The Tulsa Hurricanes football team has always done well in bowl games and have put up a lot of points on offense.

In Honolulu, Damaris Johnson broke loose for a career-high 326 all-purpose yards to set an NCAA career record and Tulsa took advantage of six-first half turnovers to beat number 24 Hawaii at their home field, Aloha Stadium, 62-35 in the Sheraton Hotels Hawaii Bowl.

The 10-3 Hurricanes stopped the nation’s number 1 passing attack and broke the game open with a 21-point third quarter for the seventh straight win and third consecutive bowl win.

Johnson was voted MVP honors, rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown. Plus, he caught four passes for 101 yards and another touchdown.

Johnson also piled up 109 yards on kickoff returns.

The Rainbow Warriors fell to 10-4, but their star player Greg Salas, a senior, had 13 receptions for 214 yards and two touchdowns and set Hawaii season records in receptions and receiving yardage.

* Tulsa’s defense gives up 305.7 yards per game through the pass and had five games where they allowed at least 371 yards.

* Ranks in the top 16 in rushing.

* Tulsa finished the season winning seven games in a row which included a win at Notre Dame and a 56-50 victory at Southern Mississippi.

* QB G.J. Kinne finished the regular season by winning his second Conference USA player of the week honor.

* WR Damaris Johnson is a junior and the NCAA career leader in kick-return yardage.


* The passing game of Bryant Moniz to slot receivers Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares averages 387.8 passing yards a game.

* RB Alex Green is Hawaii’s first 1,000-yard rusher in the run-and-shoot-era.

* The defense lead the nation with 23 interceptions.

* Hawaii has won nine of its last 10, including a win vs. Nevada. They did lose a game at Boise State.
