Grambling football program going through turmoil between players and administration

The Grambling University has had a long and historic football program.

Eddie Robinson was the longtime coach there and sent several players to the National Football League: Buck Buchanan, Gary “Big Hands” Johnson, Doug Williams, Paul “Tank” Younger, Willie Brown, Willie Davis, James Harris, Charlie Joiner and Everson Walls.

All of those former players must be shaking their heads about what is happening at one of the top historically black colleges in the United States.

There is turmoil brewing between the football team and the school’s administration over several issues like traveling to away games on busses, a football stadium that needs repairs and the firing of football coaches.

This season alone, the Tigers have had three head coaches. Doug Williams was fired after two games, George Ragsdale was replaced last Thursday by Dennis “Dirt’ Winston.

Grambling officials met this past weekend in an effort to solve problems with the football players and to avoid any more game forfeits.

The officials included university president Frank Pogue, athletic director Aaron James and Winston.

On Saturday, the football players refused to travel to play at Jackson State and thus forfeited the game.

Grambling is planning to play this coming Saturday’s game at home against Texas Southern. The game is very important to the university because its their annual High School Day, which draws in many prospective students from around the Louisiana region.
