Tony Stewart pulled away from Jimmie Johnson on a late restart Sunday to win the Pepsi 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

The four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion walked away with a bigger points lead.

Johnson finished third after a late pass by Clint Bowyer and has a 36-point lead over Denny Hamlin in the Chase for the championship with six races remaining.

Tony Stewart was well back in the Chase after running out of fuel while leading late at Loudon, New Hampshire and struggled at Dover Delaware. He drove well at Kansas City, Kansas last week, finishing fourth, but still entered the California race 10th in points, 127 behind Johnson.

Stewart’s qualifying on Friday was no so good, starting 22nd. He quickly moved his way up to the front of the pack. By the middle of the race, he was fifth and then took the lead with 51 laps left and then regained the lead after losing it briefly to Juan Pablo Montoya.

Kyle Busch wins 12th Nationwide series win; a new record

Kyle Busch took advantage of a couple of poor pit stops by Kevin Harvick’s crew and rallied from a speeding penalty to post his record 12th Nationwide series win of 2010, Saturday in Fontana, California.

Busch, who was the pole-sitter, had the best car on the restarts, but Harvick was better as the race went on at the 300-mile Auto Club Speedway.

Harvick’s crew prevented any long-run success he was trying to sustain, botching two pit stops to knock him out of the lead twice.

Points leader Brad Keselowski was second and Harvick finished in third place.
