The University of Dayton has selected one of the top young assistant coaches in college basketball today to its new basketball coach, naming Ryan “Archie” Miller.

The 32-year-old Miller comes to Dayton from the University of Arizona where as Associate Head Coach he helped the Wildcats to a 30-8 season that ended with an Elite Eight berth. Miller succeeds Brian Gregory, who was named head coach at Georgia Tech last week.

Miller has a recent connection to two teams that just missed the Final Four this season. Prior to the last two years at Arizona, he was at Ohio State for two seasons.

Miller is the 19th coach in Dayton history, and just the sixth Flyer coach in the last 64 years. The others include Tom Blackburn, Don Donoher, Jim O’Brien, Oliver Purnell and Brian Gregory.

Miller will be taking over a UD team which enjoyed its fourth straight 20-win season in 2010-11. Dayton will return three starters-Chris Johnson, Paul Williams and Josh Benson-from the team that was 22-14 and played in the NIT after reaching the championship game of the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Vercammen led the Flyers defensive effort on Saturday with a season-high 17 tackle (eight solo), two critical forced fumbles in the fourth quarter, 1.5 tackles in the backfield and a sack. Both of his fumbles forced led to a Dayton touchdowns.

The redshirt senior from Bloomfield, Michigan and Groves High School leads the Flyers in total tackles (74), solo stops (40), tackles in the backfield (12) and fumbles forced (3).

He is second in sacks (5). In the Pioneer Football League, he is fourth in total tackles and is tied for the conference lead in forced fumbles (3).

Dayton is 10th in FCS football in rushing yardage allowed (93.4 yards per game) and leads the PFL in scoring defense (20.0)
