UD’s Gavrilovic selected Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

University of Dayton Flyers freshman center Alex Gavrilovic has been named Rookie of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Conference for his performance in leading the team to a 61-40 win over Florida International on Saturday.

Gavrilovic’s contribution to win #8 for Dayton was huge as the top four players on the team’s front court depth chart was limited or unable to play. The starting frontcourt for the Flyers frontcourt, Josh Benson, Matt Kavanaugh and Chris Johnson was limited to a total of 38 out of a possible 120 minutes due to foul trouble (Benson and Kavanaugh and injury (Johnson). In addition, senior Luke Fabrizius was not dressed out because of a rib injury.

Gavrilovic came off the bench to lead UD to its come-from-behind win. He returned to action after missing the last three games with a sprained ankle, and came through with career-highs in scoring (14), rebounding (6) and minutes (22).

The Ohio State Buckeyes will host a second straight Mid-American Conference opponent this afternoon at 12 in the Horsehoe, as the dangerous Toledo Rockets come to Columbus, Ohio.

The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

With the 42-0 win over Akron last Saturday, Luke Fickell became the first Ohio State head coach to record a shutout in his debut since Woody Hayes in 1951.

The Rockets are 1-0 on the young season after a 58-22 win over FCS opponent New Hampshire last Thursday night, September 1 at the Glass Bowl in Toledo.

The Rockets featured a balanced attack on offense in the win accounting for 304 yards passing, including five TD’s, and 287 yards rushing.

Starting QB Austin Dantin completed 15 of 21 passes for 161 yards and three TD’s while sophomore QB Terrance Owens played and added two more scores on 10 of 13 passing for 122 yards.

Running back Adonis Thomas rushed for 115 yards and a score on nine carries while receiver Bernard Reedy compiled five catches for 113 yards and two TD’s.

Tim Beckman, a former Ohio State assistant coach from 2005-06, is in his third year at the northwest Ohio college with a record of 14-12 overall since 2009.

Last season, the Rockets finished 8-5 with a 34-32 loss to Florida International in the Little Caesars Bowl.

Toledo has the ninth-most BCS wins by a non-BCS school (6) since the 2003 season and have defeated five BCS teams in the past five years:

2010: Toledo 31 Purdue 20

2009: Toledo 54 Colorado 38

2008: Toledo 13 Michigan 10

2007: Toledo 36 Iowa State 35

2006: Toledo 37 Kansas 31 in 2 OT’s

Ohio State is 2-0 all-time versus Toledo.

The Buckeyes won the last meeting with Toledo, 38-0 on September 19, 2009 at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

* The Best of Times for the Rockets program came from 1969 to 1971, the Rockets went 35-0, winning three consecutive MAC titles and Tangerine Bowls.

* The program also had one of the worst beginnings in its history of the game, losing the first three of its inaugural season’s games by a combined 262-0.

* Toledo joined the Mid-American Conference in 1952, and has remained there since that year.

Wittels’ 56-game hit streak ends; falls two games short of Ventura’s record

Garrett Wittels (courtesy of FIU athletics)

All of the college baseball analysts/experts had been saying all along that Garrett Wittels would not be able to sustain his amazing hit streak since the season ended last June.

Well, they were right as Wittels’ hitting streak is over at 56 games.

The Florida International shortstop went 0 for 4 against Southwestern Louisiana, leaving him two games short of matching Robin Ventura’s 58-game Division I record set in 1987.

His streak goes down as the third-longest in collegiate baseball history.

Damain Constantino of Division III Salve Regina had a 60-game streak from 2001-2003, the NCAA all-divisions record.

The most talked about college baseball player in 2010, is ready to get the season underway.

Florida International shortstop Garrett Wittels will be in the Panthers’ lineup when their season begins this weekend, despite unresolved legal issues stemming from a rape charge in the Bahamas late last year.

Officials in the Bahamas will not begin preliminary evidentiary inquiries until April.

The junior got a base hit in all 56 games in which he played last season, two short of the NCAA record.
