The streak continues! FIU’s Wittels is now at 46 in a row

FIU infielder Garrett Wittels has extended his his hitting streak streak to 46 games, giving him sole possession of the third-longest streak in Division I history.

Wittels doubled to center field in the first inning of FIU’s game in Boca Raton, Florida against rival Florida Atlantic on Thursday night. What is phenomenal about this streak is that Wittels has a hit in every game he’s played in this season.

Florida International beat Florida Atlantic, 12-4.

The sophomore is within one game of tying Wichita State’s Phil Stephenson for second on the hit-streak list. Stephenson had a 47-game hit streak in 1981.

Oklahoma State’s Robin Ventura has the Division I record, with a 58-game streak in 1987. Wittels entered Thursday tied with Roger Schmuck, who had a base hit in 45 straight games for Arizona State in 1971.

Florida International University starting pitcher Scott Rembisz benefitted from eight runs and 17 hits by his offense, including three home runs in an 8-1 win over the South Alabama Jaguars Saturday night at the FIU baseball stadium in Miami, Florida.

Rembisz (7-4) pitched 8.1 innings of five-hit ball, striking out seven batters in his second straight win. Garrett Wittels was able to extend his NCAA-leading consecutive hitting streak to 44 games with a single to left off South Alabama starter Lance Baxter (6-2). He finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

FIU is 29-20 overall, 15-11 in the Sun Belt Conference; South Alabama falls to 30-22, 16-10 in the Sun Belt.

Sunday afternoon, the Panthers of FIU swept the South Alabama Jaguars for the second consecutive year and shutout an opponent for the first time since March 18, 2009 with their 5-0 victory.

FIU honored its five seniors Junior Arrojo, Erick Berkowitz, Tim Jobe, Corey Polizzano and Scott Rembisz before the game and each had a major impact on the weekend and the series sweep of South Alabama. Arrojo hit his third homer of the season while Polizzano and Berkowitz each threw scoreless inning. Rembisz picked up his seventh win of the year on Saturday night while Jobe reached base four times on Friday night.

With a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning off South Alabama’s Garrett Harris, sophomore Garrett Wittels extended his NCAA-leading consecutive hitting streak to 45 games on the year, tying Roger Schmuck of Arizona State who hit in 45 in a row in 1971. That makes Wittels 3rd all-time in NCAA Division I baseball history.

Wittels has hit in every game in which he’s had an at-bat this season.

Florida International is now 30-20 overall, 16-11 in the Sun Belt Conference while South Alabama drops to 30-25, 16-11 in the Sun Belt Conference.
