During this past winter, fans, media and followers of the Columbus Crew were thinking this would be a rebuilding season with the team releasing and trading away so many veterans.

I guess the management knew what they were doing as the team is still an MLS Cup contender.

The Crew, the best second-half team in Major League Soccer this season, proved its resiliency again on Saturday night, overcoming a goal by Benny Feilhaber in the 45th minute of the first half and scored three of its own in the second half for a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution at Crew Stadium.

The Crew (10-7-7, 37 points) remained on top of the Eastern Conference with the win, and improved to an impressive 2-0-4 record when trailing at the half this season.

Second-place Philadelphia (8-5-10, 34 points) played FC Dallas to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

The Crew and the Philadelphia Union will battle next Saturday, August 20 at Crew Stadium for first-place.

The Revs, a team the Crew used to have trouble with game-after-game in years past, dropped to 4-11-9.

An own goal off the shin of New England defender Kevin Alston in the 54th minute opened the Crew’s scoring.

Julius James earned his first goal of the season in the 75th minute on a header off a corner kick from Josh Gardner.

Emilio Renteria easily scored his fifth goal of the season in the 81st minute on an unmarked finish from six yards out after midfielder Robbie Rogers set up the goal.

GAME NOTES:

* The Crew are 7-1-4 at home this season.

* James’ goal was his first in Black & Gold and the fourth of his career.

* Dilly Duka made his first appearance since June 4. His assist was his third of the season.

* The game-tying goal own goal was the club’s 700th in franchise history. The Crew is the fourth MLS team to score 700 goals joining DC United, the LA Galaxy and FC Dallas.

* A nice crowd attended the game, 13,041 under partly cloudy skies and 83 degrees.
