When the Columbus Crew’s new ownership headed by Anthony Precourt fired longtime Crew employee Robert Warzycha last September 18, fas of the team wondered if he would be offered a chance to stay with the organization in another capacity.

After all, the 50-year-old was an original member of the Crew, served as an assistant coach and head coach.

The chance to stay on in another capacity did not materialize but Warzycha has landed back in his native Poland as a head coach for Gornik Zabrze.

Gornik started the season at 0-3-2 and everyone knows that pro soccer is identical to pro hockey, slow starts get coach’s fired.

Warzycha was named coach of Gornik this week. They play in the Polish top division.

Warzycha, who was born in Siemkowice, Poland played five seasons with Gornik Zabrze from 1987-1991 early in his career. He then played for Everton and then onto the MLS and the Crew.

WORLD CUP SOCCER: United States wins 3-1 over Australia in warmup game

compiled from staff, wire, U.S. Soccer and MLS reports

Former Columbus Crew star and current LA Galaxy member Edson Buddle score his first two international goals and Herculez Gomez added a third, leading the United States over Australia 3-1 Saturday in the American’s last warmup for their World Cup opener against England.

Eventhough the United States won the match, the 14th-ranked U.S.’s defense was shaky against number 20 Australia, a cause for concern getting ready for the June 12 World Cup game against England.

Playing just his third game for the national team, Buddle scored in the fourth and 31st minutes. That offset a 19th-minute equalizer by Tim Cahill, who beat Everton teammate Tim Howard for his 20th international goal.

Gomez and Buddle were both surprise picks for the U.S. World Cup roster over Chad Marshall and Robbie Rogers of the Columbus Crew.

Gomez entered the match in the 82nd minute and scored from 8 yards in injury time off a pass from Landon Donovan. It was the second international goal for Gomez, who also scored against the Czech Republic last week.
