Former Ohio State star Deshaun Thomas signs to play in France

Former Ohio State basketball player Deshaun Thomas has signed a one-year contract with JSF Nanterre, who won France’s Pro A playoffs last season.

Another former Buckeyes’ basketball player, David Lighty, a teammate of Thomas’ at OSU, played for the same team last year and was the MVP.

Lighty has moved on, as he did not re-sign with JSF Nanterre. The Cleveland, Ohio native has accepted an invitation from the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks to attend training camp and compete for a roster spot.

Nanterre, will not only defend its French title this coming season, but will also play against some strong competition in Europe’s Euroleague.

University of Alabama golfer Emma Talley wins U.S. Amateur

19-year-old Emma Talley won the United States Women’s Amateur beating Yueer Cindy Feng 2 and 1 at the Country Club of Charleston, South Carolina.

Talley just finished her freshman season at the University of Alabama.

In 2008, Talley was on the victorious U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team, which defeated Europe 22 to 2.

Born in Paducah, KY, the 5’9 golfer grew up in Princeton, KY.

It took 20 years, but Mickelson wins in Europe & Scottish Open

It took 20 years for Phil Mickelson to win an event in Europe.

The 43-year-old California native birdied the first playoff hole to fend off Branden Grace and win the Scottish Open in Inverness on the European Tour.

Mickelson could’ve won the match in regulation, but three-putted the 72nd hole.

In the playoff, “Lefty” took control immediately, hitting a shot from 45 yards that landed within a foot of the 18th pin, leaving Grace with a 25-footer to match him. Grace’s putt rolled past the hole.

“The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins readies to defend IBF title at 48

Bernard Hopkins will be defending his IBF light heavyweight boxing title against Karo Murat on July 13 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The 48-year-old Hopkins has a record of 53-6-2 with 32 knockouts. He is a minority partner in Golden Boy Promotions.

The 29-year-old Murat, who is from Iraq, primarily fights in Europe, is 25-1-1.


Chicago Fire defender Gibbs retires at age 32

32-year-old Chicago Fire veteran defender Cory Gibbs has retired from Major League Soccer after suffering a season-ending knee injury last spring.

He played 12 years in the MLS.

Gibbs, who played in 111 MLS games, was drafted by the Miami Fusion in the fourth round of the 2001 MLS draft.

He also played in Europe.
