The bowl season continues tonight on ESPN, as the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl has a 7:30 pm start at Ford Field in Detroit.

With a $1.5 million payout, Western Kentucky (7-5) plays local favorite, Central Michigan (6-6).

Three years ago, the Hilltoppers were 0-12 and in 2011, they finished at 7-5 but did receive a bowl invitation.

In 2012, despite a 2-4 stretch run, Western Kentucky found out that its 7-5 record was good enough this time around, but they had to wait until the final hours and minutes on December 2 that they’d be playing in the Motor City.

The Hilltoppers are making their first bowl appearance as an FBS member.

Central Michigan is making its fifth bowl appearance in the last seven years and first since 2009.

The Hilltoppers are led on offense by Antonio Andrews with 1,609 rushing yards and have one of the top tight ends in the country in Jack Doyle who is 6’6, 255 pounds. He has caught 47 balls for 530 yards.

Western Kentucky has the best defense in the Sun Belt Conference, allowing 342.8 ypg and 136.6 on the ground.

The Chippewas of Central Michigan started the season at 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference but was able to get bowl eligible by winning its final three games against Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Massachusetts.

CMU has a very porous defense allowing 441.2 yards per game and 197 on the ground.

But the Chippewas have a deep and talented receiving corps with Titus Davis, Andrew Flory, Courtney Williams and Cody Wilson. At running back, they have Zurlon Tipton with 1,391 yards and 19 TD’s, QB Ryan Radcliff who threw for 20 TD’s and 2,905 yards.

Jack Taylor

Before Tuesday night, November 20, nobody across the United States knew of Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor.

By now everybody knows he scored 138 points against Faith Baptist Bible College in Grinnell, Iowa.

Taylor is a 5’10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls High School in Wisconsin. He was a four-year letter winner in basketball, scoring 1,295 points which is second all-time in school history. He was an All-Conference, All-Academic student-athlete.

Reports out of Iowa said that he was in a shooting slump. He scored 19 points on 5 of 19 shooting against Rockford College and was 6 of 23 from the floor for 28 points against Crown College.

Then last night, he exploded for 138 points on 52 of 108 shooting, in 36 minutes of action. He was 27 of 71 from 3-point land, 7-10 on free throws, grabbed 3 rebounds, with 3 steals and 6 turnovers.

After 3 games and 185 points, he is averaging a whopping 61.7ppg, which leads NCAA Division III and all of college basketball.

Head coach David Arseneault has been at Grinnell 24 years

Hours since the game’s finish, Taylor has been interviewed by media outlets from coast to coast including ESPN and should be for days to come.

Scoring the 138 points was just one national record set by Taylor. He also broke NCAA records for field goals (52), field goals attempted (108), 3-pointers (27) and 3-pointers attempted (71).

Furthermore, Grinnell set a school record for points scored in a game with 179 and turnovers forced with 49.

Taylor finished off his huge night in style by scoring a Division III record 28 consecutive points for the Pioneers, including eight 3-pointers and seven straight without a miss.

Taylor had 58 points at halftime and eventually passed the NCAA Division III record of 89, set last year by teammate Griffin Lentsch, a senior.

After halftime, Taylor chased down what was deemed to be the unbeatable overall mark of 113 points, set by NCAA Division II performer Clarence “Bevo” Francis of Rio Grande in 1954.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt, as Grinnell scored the first 10 points.

The Pioneers continued to cruise and led 85-46 at halftime.

Taylor’s big night is even more of a story considering that he just recently transferred to Grinnell, which is located 50 miles east of Des Moines, Iowa. He played one season at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The Pioneers, under head coach David Arseneault, have been known to set scoring records and for their shot selection. They press and shoot 3′s all the time. The team has led the nation in scoring 17 of the past 19 seasons and have been ranked first in 3-point shooting 15 of those 19 seasons.
