Browns upset world champion Saints using gadget plays

Colt McCoy (U of Texas photo)

The Cleveland Browns, according to media sources, spend a few minutes at practice each week working on gadget plays just in case they need to use them in a game.

In Sunday’s game against New Orleans, the Browns used, not one, but several trick plays.

They include, a 68-yard run by their punter Reggie Holmes, a 62-yard throwback by Joshua Cribbs to Eric Wright on a punt return, a 13-yard pass from running back Peyton Hillis to quarterback Colt McCoy, in upsetting and stunning the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, 30-17.

This is the third straight season that Cleveland has upset a defending Super Bowl champion. In 2008, the New York Giants, 2009, the Pittsburgh Steelers and now the New Orleans Saints.

On defense, the Browns were using all types of fronts and alignments that basically made Saints quarterback Drew Brees look like a rookie. It was one of his worst games in the NFL, throwing four interceptions.

Colt McCoy and the Cleveland offense had an impressive fourth quarter drive that chewed up 7:34 on a 13-play, 50-yard drive.

The 2-5 Browns now go into the bye week having won two of its last three games.

After Adam Jones took the opening kickoff 52 yards to the Bills 47-yard line, Palmer drove the Bengals to a touchdown in five plays. With the ball on the Buffalo 9, Bills linebacker Andra Davis couldn’t keep up with Bengals rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham who scored his first NFL touchdown. Gresham had four receptions for 45 yards.

After Buffalo tied the game up on a Roscoe Parrish 12-yard touchdown catch on a Trent Edwards pass, the Bengals drove down the field in nine plays. They scored when Chad Ochocinco shook off stumbling defender Leodis McKelvin and caught it in the back left corner of the end zone from 6 yards out.

The Bengals, now 2-2 on the preseason, wraps up that portion of the season Thursday at Indianapolis.

CLEVELAND BROWNS AT DETROIT LIONS

The Cleveland Browns have improved in some areas this preseason. But Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions show that much work is still needed to even get to a .500 record in the upcoming season.

Saturday night at Ford Field, the Browns lost three fumbles and allowed three touchdown drives in the second half as the Detroit Lions came away with a 35-27 win.

Cleveland Browns reach agreement with Haden

First-round draft pick Joe Haden has reached a contract agreement with the Cleveland Browns.

The deal came just hours after Haden missed the first workout of training camp in Berea, Ohio, a southern Cleveland suburb.

Haden, a cornerback out of Florida, was on his way to Cleveland on Saturday after signing the five-year contract.

The Browns had opened camp on Saturday morning. Head coach Eric Mangini was worried that Haden was falling further behind in drills and learning of the defensive playbook every day that he missed camp.

The number 7 overall selection in 2010, Haden was the last draft pick to sign a contract and is expected to challenge Eric Wright for a starting  job.
