United States goes to 6-0 in world basketball championships

The U.S. basketball team wants to win the World Basketball Championships. And they want to show the world that they don’t need LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and Amare Stoudamire to do it.

They are starting to be taken seriously by the other teams in the tournament in Istanbul, Turkey, especially after Monday’s 121-66 win over Angola in the quarterfinals.

Chauncey Billups scored 16 of his 19 points and Kevin Durant all of his 17 points in the first half.

The U.S. made sure this game was over rather quickly, as they raced out to a 10-0 spurt to go up 22-7 and 33-13 after one quarter of play.

The Americans forced turnovers that led to easy baskets on the fast break. When the Angolans forced them to play a half-court game, the NBA stars shot 18 of 38 from three-point range.

Eric Gordon and Rudy Gay also scored 17 points for the United States. Gordon shot 5 of 6 from 3-point land.

Joaquim Gomes, who played his college ball at Valparaiso University of the Horizon League, scored 21 points for Angola, which finished  fourth in Group A.

The Americans will play Russia on Thursday night. Russia defeated New Zealand, 78-56.

U.S. national basketball team is set; Rondo withdraws suddenly

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has selected his final 12-man roster for the world championships. They play a final tuneup against Greece on Wednesday before the real games start in Turkey on Saturday.

But the squad will have to play without Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo who asked to withdraw from consideration.

Rajon Rondo (NBA)

Rondo had started the United States first two exhibition games, then to the surprise of all, including team members, he didn’t play at all Sunday when the Americans edged Spain in another game.

The final roster includes: Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, Tyson Chandler, Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, Stephen Curry, Lamar Odom, Eric Gordon, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook and Danny Granger.
