* In 1882, the Ellis Island Immigrant Station in New York formally opened.

* In 1953, country singer Hank Williams, Sr., was discovered dead in the back seat of his car during a stop in Oak Hill, West Virginia, while he was being driven to a concert date in Canton, Ohio.

* In 1959, Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries overthrow Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista, who fled to the Dominican Republic.

* In 1984, the breakup of AT&T took place as the telecommuincations giant was divested of its 22 Bell System companies under an antitrust agreement.

* In 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect.

* On September 22, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, Captain Nathan Hale, age 21, was hanged as a spy by the British in New York.

* In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all slaves in rebel states would be free as of January 1, 1863.

* In 1927, Gene Tunney successfully defended his heavyweight boxing title against Jack Dempsey in the famous “long count” fight in Chicago.

* In 1964, the musical Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway. It ran for 3,242 performances.

* In 1975, Sara Jane Moore shot at President Gerald R. Ford outside a San Francisco hotel but missed. Moore served 32 years in prison before being paroled on December 31, 2007.

* In 1980, the Persian Gulf conflict between Iran and Iraq erupted into a war that lasted almost eight years.

* In 1989, songwriter Irving Berlin died at age 101.
