The Akron Zips ended their 30-game road losing streak by beating the Miami RedHawks on Saturday, 24-17.

They also ended another losing streak of 28 straight losses to Football Subdivision teams.

Akron’s Jawon Chrisholm rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns to fuel the win.

The Zips took control in the second half by pulling ahead 24-7.

Akron had not won on the road since a 45-35 win against Eastern Michigan on October 18, 2008. They also had not won at Miami since October 21, 1939. The Zips last beat an FBS team on November 28, 2010, against the Buffalo Bulls.

The Zips are now 2-6, 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

The Miami RedHawks are 0-7, 0-3 with their only bright spot being QB Austin Boucher who completed 23 of 34 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

The bowl season continues tonight on ESPN, as the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl has a 7:30 pm start at Ford Field in Detroit.

With a $1.5 million payout, Western Kentucky (7-5) plays local favorite, Central Michigan (6-6).

Three years ago, the Hilltoppers were 0-12 and in 2011, they finished at 7-5 but did receive a bowl invitation.

In 2012, despite a 2-4 stretch run, Western Kentucky found out that its 7-5 record was good enough this time around, but they had to wait until the final hours and minutes on December 2 that they’d be playing in the Motor City.

The Hilltoppers are making their first bowl appearance as an FBS member.

Central Michigan is making its fifth bowl appearance in the last seven years and first since 2009.

The Hilltoppers are led on offense by Antonio Andrews with 1,609 rushing yards and have one of the top tight ends in the country in Jack Doyle who is 6’6, 255 pounds. He has caught 47 balls for 530 yards.

Western Kentucky has the best defense in the Sun Belt Conference, allowing 342.8 ypg and 136.6 on the ground.

The Chippewas of Central Michigan started the season at 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference but was able to get bowl eligible by winning its final three games against Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Massachusetts.

CMU has a very porous defense allowing 441.2 yards per game and 197 on the ground.

But the Chippewas have a deep and talented receiving corps with Titus Davis, Andrew Flory, Courtney Williams and Cody Wilson. At running back, they have Zurlon Tipton with 1,391 yards and 19 TD’s, QB Ryan Radcliff who threw for 20 TD’s and 2,905 yards.

Toledo’s Cullop chosen ‘Dispatch’ women’s coach of the year

The state of Ohio has several top notch women’s basketball coaches: Jim Jabir of Dayton, Jim Foster of Ohio State, Kevin McGuff, formerly of Xavier, Sue Ramsey of Ashland and Bob Lindsay of Kent State. But none of them won the Columbus Dispatch’s women’s basketball coach of the year.

The 2010-2011 honor goes to University of Toledo head coach Tricia Cullop.

The Rockets third year head coach helped turn a downtrodden program around and thus, was voted the Dispatch Women’s Ohio-College Basketball Coach of the Year by her fellow coaches.

Toledo lost in the MAC tournament semifinal round to Eastern Michigan 61-55 and felt they would not get a postseason bid.

Although the Rockets won the MAC regular season championship, ending Bowling Green’s run of titles at six straight, the team knew that postseason bids are not a shoo-in.

They received a WNIT bid instead of the coveted NCAA bid.

The Rockets rebounded quickly and proceded to win six straight games and capture the WNIT championship. Their final win was 76-68 over Southern California before a Mid-American Conference record crowd of 7,301 in Savage Arena.

That title was the first postseason basketball title by a men’s or women’s team in MAC history.

Toledo won 29 games this season and it was a far cry from their five straight losing seasons before Cullop was hired away from the Evansville Aces three years ago.

Cullop says she is successful as a head coach because she played and learned from one of the best in the game, Lin Dunn while at Purdue from 1990 to 1993. She played in three NCAA Tournaments and won a Big Ten title. She was voted to be captain as a senior.
