The New York Knicks were supposed to be led by Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

But instead, they’re being led by the Lin factor and the results are very good.

Jeremy Lin did not have to score a lot of points on Wednesday night in the New York Knicks, 100-85 win over the Sacramento Kings.

The Harvard grad handed out a career-best 13 assists as the Knicks reached the .500 mark and won its seventh straight game.

Lin, a point guard, scored 10 points in a Knicks offense that shot 51 percent from the floor.

Lin scored 136 points in his first five starting assignments, most by any NBA player since the league merged with the ABA in 1976.

Lin is the reigning NBA Eastern Conference player of the week. He played 26 minutes in the game and sat out the end of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter.

New York is 15-15 on the season.

This is the first time since the end of last season that the Knicks have won seven-in-a-row.

Celebrities at the game included former vice president Al Gore and former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.

Late substitute Chad Barrett stunned the Crew with a goal in the third minute of stoppage time to give the LA Galaxy a  1-0 win before a sellout crowd of 21,203 Saturday at Crew Stadium.

The Crew drops to 11-11-8 good for 41 points and are tied for second-place in the Eastern Conference with Sporting KC, one point behind Houston.

The win puts LA at 17-3-10, good for 61 points ahead of Real Salt Lake atop the Western Conference.

The sellout crowd of 21,203 was the largest at Crew Stadium since October 4, 2008 against L.A.

Longtime Crew captain Frankie Hejduk returned to Columbus for the first time since joining LA prior to this season. Hejduk served as captain for the Galaxy in the match, his fourth start of the season.

The Columbus Crew and their owners, the Hunt Sports Group, have reached an agreement with 48-year-old head coach Robert Warzycha on a new multi-year deal.

Terms and length of the contract with the native of Poland, was not revealed per MLS policy.

One of the Crew’s all-time best players in the midfield, Warzycha is in his third season as the head coach and 10th season on the team’s coaching staff. He has won 45 games in the regular season, and is 55-41-33 in all games. His teams are 30-8-11 for a winning .724 winning percentage at home in Crew Stadium.

The Crew are amazingly in first place in the Eastern Conference this year, with an 11-8-7 record and 40 points. Amazing in the fact that most of the team’s popular and most-season players were either traded, cut or not re-signed in order to get younger and quicker and it has paid off.

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union battled for first-place in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night at Crew Stadium.

The Crew were nursing a slim three-point lead over the Union at the start of the night, 37-34.

By the end of the night, a very noisy and enthusiastic crowd of 13,869 went home happy as the MLS’ hardest-working team went home with another win at home, 3-1 and have opened up a 6-point lead over the second-year Union.

Columbus is now 3-0-0 all-time versus Philadelphia.

The new strike-team for Columbus is Emilio Renteria and Andres Mendoza. Both scored goals last night.

Mendoza converted on a penalty-kick in the 51st minute to give the Crew the eventual game-winning goal.

The game-winning opportunity came about after Union (8-6-10) defender Sheanon Williams was called for a handball when a pass from Robbie Rogers hit him as he was shielding himself with his hands.

Mendoza’s shot was eventually stopped by Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, but the way rolled underneath him and into the net.

Renteria scored the Crew’s first goal in the 37th minute.

The Union’s only goal was knocked in by Veljko Paunovic who took a cross from Keon Daniel on a corner kick which tied the game at 1-1 in the 42nd minute.

The Crew have been solid on penalty-kicks this year going 6-for-6 and Mendoza himself is 4-for-4.

Post-game press conferences are with Peter Nowak, head coach of Philadelphia and Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer.
