Belmont leaving Atlantic Sun for tougher Ohio Valley Conference

The Belmont University Bruins have been the team to beat in the Atlantic Sun Conference which also includes: East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida, South Carolina Upstate and Stetson.

The Bruins have won the conference championship in five of the past seven years, but the school is leaving after this school year.

Starting next year with the 2012-13 school year, Belmont will be competing in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The benchmark school in the OVC has the been the Murray State Racers who have dominated the league recently.

The OVC and the Atlantic Sun have been one-bid leagues and the NCAA has rarely taken two from a mid-major conference.

Belmont was established in 1890, has 6,374 students and located in Nashville, Tennessee. The school has 15 varsity sports, 8 for women, 7 for men.

Their most notable alumni includes: Jimmy Bowen, record producer; Christian music artist Steven Curtis Chapman; country artist Brad Paisley; TV star Minnie Pearl, born Sarah Cannon; country artist Pam Tillis, Mel Tillis’ daughter; country artist Lee Ann Womack and country artist Trisha Yearwood.

OSU men’s tennis team advances in NCAA tourney

The fourth-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team beat Ball State 4-0 Friday in the opening round of the NCAA team championship at the Stickney Tennis Center.

Two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year Chase Buchanan clinched the first-round win for the Buckeyes with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zane Smith at #2 singles. Buchanan is 35-2.

Ohio State also won the doubles point.

Ohio State extended its home win streak to 127 matches.

The Buckeyes play Saturday afternoon May 14 at 1:00 p.m. in the second round against Notre Dame who defeated East Tennessee State 4-3.

Flyers freshman Staten named Atlantic 10 co-rookie of the week

University of Dayton Flyers freshman point guard Juwan Staten was named the Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week for his play during the week ending December 5. This is his second A-10 Rookie Award this young season.

Staten averaged 13.0 points and 6.5 assists while shooting .833 (10-12) from the free throw line in two games. He scored 12 points and had eight assists in UD’s come-from-behind win over Miami on Saturday. Staten was the leader of the comeback, scoring eight of his points and garnering five of his assists in the second half, and sealed the win by going 8-for-8 from the line in the game’s final two-and-a-half minutes.

Staten also had 14 assists and five assists in the Flyers’ mid-week loss to East Tennessee State.

He shared the award with La Salle’s Tyreek Duren.

Staten is currently averaging 8.5 points and 6.6 assists per game. He leads the A-10 in assists. Staten is also the top freshman in the country and is 13th overall in assists per game. He was the first freshman to start at point guard for Dayton since Edwin Young started the first 12 games of the 1996-97 season.

East Tennessee State stops Dayton’s home court non-conference winning streak

The Dayton Flyers 40-home game winning streak against non-conference opponents was snapped in a recent 73-68 loss to a good East Tennessee State team coach by Murray Bartow. Dayton’s last conference loss was to Vanderbilt on December 30, 2005, 63-60.

The Flyers saw their record fall to 5-2 overall after suffering their second straight loss of the season.

The Buccaneers, who have made two consecutive NCAA appearances, improve to 3-2 on the season, after picking up their first road win of the season.

Junior Chris Johnson led UD with 15 points, but senior Chris Wright set a career-high with 15 rebounds on his way to a double-double to go with his 13 points. Freshman Juwan Staten with 14 points and Paul Williams with 11 points also scored in double figures for Dayton.

ETSU senior Justin Tubbs led all scorers in the game with 26 points. The Bucs shot 47.9 percent from the field, including 40.9 from three-point range, while Dayton shot just 33.3 percent.

Despite a slow start in the game, Dayton came back to lead 38-33 at the half.

ETSU was up 17-3 with 14:54 to go in the first half  and 22-8 then went cold. The Flyers took advantage to go on an 18-0 run to go up 26-22 with 7:54 to go. The lead expanded to 36-27 on a fast break layup by Staten with 4:17 left until the break.

Ohio State women blasts East Tennessee State as Prahalis returns

Ohio State point guard Samantha Prahalis finally made her 2010-2011 season debut for the Ohio State women’s basketball team after sitting out three games due to an NCAA suspension for secondary rules violations.

The seventh-ranked Buckeyes were glad to have her back on-board as she scored 18 points, garnered eight assists which gave her 500 for her career as Ohio State ran off with an easy win over East Tennessee State, 80-47 in Value City Arena.

Prahalis, being a fancy point guard with trick passes and blind passes, did commit nine turnovers in the game. She said she felt nervous after the 3-game suspension.

Senior center Jantel Lavender had the 60th double-double of her career with 20 points and 11 rebounds. During the game, Lavender moved past her predeceesor at center, Jessica Davenport (1,094) and into second place in program history with 1,097 rebounds.
