Jackson new hitting coach at Louisville for 2012

40-year-old Ryan Jackson will be entering his first season as the Louisville Bats hitting coach.

2012 will mark his sixth season in the Cincinnati Reds organization after spending the last three years as the hitting coach for the Carolina Mudcats.

Jackson played 11 years on the professional level including parts of four seasons at the major league level with Florida, Seattle and Detroit. He had a career average of .239 with 7 homers and 52 RBI’s.

He is a Duke University graduate.

Former Duke star Capel hired by alma mater as assistant

Former Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel was hired by Duke University as an assistant coach.

Capel, a former Blue Devils guard, spent the past nine seasons as a coach at Virginia Commonwealth and Oklahoma.

The Sooners fired him in March following their second straight losing season.

Rivers leads Team USA to win over World Select, 92-80


The Hoop Summit game was played this past weekend. The event matches the top United States high school seniors against the 19-under international players.

Austin Rivers of Winter Park, Florida, a future Duke University guard, scored 20 points to lead Team USA to a 92-80 victory against a World Select team over the weekend in the Nike Hoop Summit basketball game held in Portland, Oregon.

Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey and Anthony Davis of Perspectives Charter High School in Chicago, both Kentucky Wildcat signees, each scored 16 points and five rebounds for the USA.

Duke’s Irving to enter NBA draft

Duke University point guard Kyrie Irving has informed the school that he is entering the NBA draft after just one season on campus.

The move is surprising due to Irving playing only 11 games and missed almost two-thirds of the season because of an injured big toe on his right foot.

The 6’2 guard averaged 17.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Capel fired by Oklahoma Sooners

Jeff Capel, the former Duke University guard from 1993-1997, was fired as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Capel was 96-69 in five seasons with Oklahoma, but he followed up a trip to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament with the basketball program’s first back-to-back losing seasons since 1967.

Capel had a record, the past two seasons of 17-36.

He had five years left on the contract that the Sooners extended after Oklahoma was one win from the 2009 Final Four.
