Collegiate Baseball ranks Arkansas 8th in pre-season poll

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas baseball team is ranked eighth in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 40 poll.

The Razorbacks return 19 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished with a 40-22 record and won the SEC Western Division championship. Arkansas returns five position starters from last year’s team, including freshman All-American Dominic Ficociello, who hit .335 with four homers and 50 RBI in 2011.

On the mound, the Razorbacks return 10 pitchers, led by junior DJ Baxendale, who earned second-team All-SEC honors after going 10-2 with a 1.58 ERA last year. The Razorbacks also bring back freshman All-Americans Barrett Astin and Nolan Sanburn. Astin went 5-2 with three saves a 2.72 ERA last season, while Sanburn posted a 2-4 record with a team-high eight saves and a 3.62 ERA.

The SEC was well represented in the poll with six league teams among the top 40. Joining Arkansas in the top 10 are Florida at No. 1 and defending national champion South Carolina at No. 2. LSU (No. 12), Georgia (No. 18) and Vanderbilt (No. 23) are also ranked in the poll. Two of Arkansas’ non-conference opponents in 2012 were among the top 40 as Texas (No. 5) and Oklahoma (No. 16) were included in the rankings.

Arkansas opens the 2012 season on Friday, Feb. 17, when it hosts Villanova at Baum Stadium.

Arkansas sophomore pitcher DJ Baxendale has been selected to the 22-man roster for the 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Baxendale was thrilled with the honor. “It’s a real honor to be selected for the team and to be able to represent the University of Arkansas on Team USA,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing some tough competition this summer and representing my country on the baseball field.”

Baxendale is the eighth Arkansas player to be selected for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and the first since Andy Wilkins was picked for the team in 2009. Baxendale joins Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn on this year’s team as an assistant coach.

A Jacksonville, Florida native, Baxendale is one of the most versatile pitchers in college baseball, seeing time in both the Razorbacks’ starting rotation and in the bullpen. Baxendale currently ranks third in the SEC with a 1.58 ERA and has a 7-1 record with two saves in 14 appearances, including eight starts. In 57 innings pitched this season, Baxendale has given up 14 runs, only 10 earned, and struck out 53 batters, while issuing 11 walks. Opponents are batting just .226 against the sophomore right hander.

The 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will get together on June 22. The team will play 11 games during the summer, culminating with a five-game series against Japan July 3-8. The series opens on July 3 at 3:05 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. Additional players will be selected to the team in the absence of players on the 22-roster who are competing in Omaha at the NCAA College World Series.
