HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Africentric Boys team continues running through Division IV tourney teams

The top-seeded Africentric Nubians have been tough on teams all season. The only losses on their record, two, were at the hands of the City League South Division champion Walnut Ridge Scots and to Bloom Carroll.

The Nubians raced out to a 33-6 first quarter lead and easily ran over Northside Christian in Division IV semifinal play at Hilliard Bradley.

The Nubians were led by Jermaine Saunders with 15 points and eight assists.

Head coach Michael Bates and the Nubians are now 20-3 while the Lions from Westerville, finishes the season at 10-10.



HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Africentric rolls to lopsided win over Gilead Christian

The Africentric boys basketball team, which was second in the City League South Division, ran all over Gilead Christian at Hilliard Bradley, 91-39.

Gilead Christian School, which is located in Mount Gilead, Ohio, could not stay with the top-seeded Nubians and trailed 56-9 at the half.

The Nubians, one of the favorites in Division IV, was led by Hosie Smith with 12 points and 10 rebounds and improved to 18-3 on the season.

The Nubians have only lost to Bloom-Carroll and Walnut Ridge twice on the season.

Gilead Christian ends the season at 2-18.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Centennial holds off Wellington School of Columbus

The Centennial Stars of the Columbus City League played a non-conference game against Division IV Wellington Jaguars on Saturday afternoon.

The Stars took control early at 14-9 in the opening quarter and led 31-25 at the half.

Centennial then took full control in the third quarter leading 52-38 and held on in the fourth as the Jaguars put up 23 points but fell short.

The Stars won 69-61.

Elias “Boo” Osborne scored 19 points, Eric Wilson added 16 and Keenan Smith chipped in with 12 to lead Centennial who improves to 12-6.

Wellington, who drops to 9-7, was led in scoring by Tyler Sharp with 25 points.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Local football teams to change divisions in 2011

There are several Columbus area football teams that will be changing divisions this fall in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s biennial realignment based on enrollment.

Moving to Division I from Division II are Dublin Jerome, Dublin Scioto, Hilliard Bradley, Olentangy, Olentangy Orange and St. Charles.

Moving to Division II from Division I are Franklin Heights, Marion Harding, Mount Vernon, Northland, West and Worthington Kilbourne.

Other schools being affected include, Centennial and Independence moving to Division III from Division II, Bishop Ready moving form IV from V and Africentric moving from VI from V.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Ferguson, Watts get state honors

Raven Ferguson of Africentric and Shicole Watts of Harvest Prep were named Division III and IV Players of the Year, respectively, by the Associated Press.

A 5’11 guard, Ferguson averaged 19.5 points for Africentric.

Ferguson is sharing the award with Middletown Madison star, Ally Malott.

Watts, a 6’1 senior, was named Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after averaging 14 points a game for the Warriors.
