Northland product Burke starting for Michigan basketball team; plays 18 minutes in debut

University of Michigan freshman Trey Burke, from Columbus Northland High School, was in the starting lineup tonight as the Wolverines opened their season against the Ferris State Bulldogs.

Last week in Michigan’s exhibition game, Burke scored seven points, dished out four assists and two steals against Wayne State, a 47-39 victory.

Michigan beat Ferris State, 59-33. A 24-3 run in the 2nd half iced the game. Burke had a typical game for a freshman as he learns the college game: 18 minutes of play, 1-7 from the field, 0-4 from 3-point land, 1-2 on free throws, 4 rebounds and 3 points.

Burke, was the Dispatch All-Metro Player of the year last season.

Northland’s Burke receives All-Metro Player of the Year & first team honors

The post-season awards keep piling up for Northland senior guard Trey Burke.

For the third straight year, a Vikings player has been honored on the Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year Award.

Burke this season became more of a scorer, shooter and team leader in leading Northland (26-2) and a Ohio Division I State Runner-up finish after losing to Cincinnati La Salle on Saturday night.

Burke scored 23.6 ppg, 6.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals, while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 73 percent from the free throw line.

He is joined on the first team by other area stars including Matt Bingaya of Delaware, Brian Sullivan of Upper Arlington, Traevon Jackson of Westerville South and Stevie Taylor of Gahanna.

Coach of the Year goes to Hartley Hawks head coach Randy Kortokrax, who’s team was 22-2 and made it to the Division II state semifinals against Akron St.Vincent-St. Mary’s.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Ferguson named All-Metro Player of the Year

Raven Ferguson, the All-Ohio forward from Columbus Africentric continues to rake in the honors.

She’ll be an Ohio State Buckeyes player next year and is looking forward to that.

Ferguson has been named The Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year.

Ferguson averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and four steals in leading Africentric to the City League championship and to the Division III regional championship game.

She scored 1,739 points in her Nubians’ career and led the school to 90 wins over four seasons.

The Africentric Nubians play in the City South Division.
