Purdue’s Plawecki named finalist for Dick Howser Award

The Purdue Boilermakers baseball team has enjoyed a great season, going 41-11 overall, 17-6 in the Big Ten.

The program has achieved a season-record for wins as well as their first regular-season title since 1909.

One of the reasons is junior catcher Kevin Plawecki.

Plawecki has been named as one of 35 finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the top player in college baseball.

Purdue is 13th-ranked in the country in baseball.

The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager, who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.

The Dick Howser Trophy winner is determined by two rounds of national voting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The award will be presented on Friday, June 15, the opening day of the 2012 College World Series.

A Florida native, Howser was twice an All-America shortstop at Florida State (1957-58), then coached the Seminoles in 1979, after a career as a major league player and coach. After one year in the college ranks, Howser returned to the majors to manage the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals and won the World Series with the Royals in 1985. The baseball stadium on the Florida State campus is named for Howser.

Plawecki has started all 52 games for the Boilermakers. The clean-up hitter leads the team in doubles with 19, extra-base hits with 26, a .455 on-base percentage,.562 slugging percentage. He is second in runs scored with 48, walks with 23, in batting average at .366 and is the most difficult hitter to strike out in the Big Ten with eight in 200 at bats.

The winner of the award, which goes to the best collegiate catcher in the country, will be announced at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2010.

Burkhart, a junior from Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High School, started every game for the Buckeyes in 2010.

Ohio State junior right-hander Alex Wimmers was named one of 25 finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is governed by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the College Baseball Foundation.

Three finalists for the award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball, will be announced just prior to the first game of the College World Series with a press conference schduled for Saturday June 10 at 11 a.m.
