Cincinnati Reds, a popular team on the internet

(By OCAL, courtesy Clker.com)

Every baseball fan knows the popular teams due to history are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.

According to the Cincinnati Business Courier, the Cincinnati Reds are among those teams as well.

The Reds were ranked 10th in the latest Yahoo! rankings of the most searched Major League Baseball teams on the world wide web in the past year.

Cincinnati plays in the smallest market of any of the top nine most searched teams, but finished higher than teams in much larger cities Philadelphia Phillies (11th) and the Chicago White Sox (13th).

The Detroit Tigers, the defending American League champions are first followed by the Yankees.

There’s going to be a dynamite pitching matchup tonight in Arlington, Texas as the Detroit Tigers visit the Texas Rangers.

Two of the American League’s top right-handers will hook up, Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander.

The 26-year-old Darvish is the ace of the Rangers’ starting rotation and baseball’s strikeout leader with 80.

The 30-year-old Verlander, a perennial Cy Young Award candidate, is the ace of the Detroit staff. He has led the American League in strikeouts in three of the past four seasons.

Tigers’ Cabrera hits 300th homer in win over White Sox

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera hit his 300th career homer, to become just the second-Venezuelan-born player to reach that plateau in Major League Baseball.

Cabrera’s third inning blast against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday was his second homer in Detroit’s 6-4 win.

“The Big Cat” Andres Galarraga leads the pack as the career leader in homers for players from Venezuela with 399. Galarraga is now 51 years old and lives in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Baltimore Orioles pound Lowe, Indians, 10-2

Currently, at the end of July, the Cleveland Indians look more like pretenders, than contenders in the American League Central Division.

The Tribe has been sputtering since June 23. The Indians are 10-14 and has been passed up by the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers in the up-for-grabs division. The Indians are three games behind the White Sox.

With Derek Lowe on the mound last night, Cleveland did not fare well as a contender. Lowe gave up nine runs in three-plus innings of their 10-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in front of a disappointed crowd of 33,954 at Progressive Field.

The Orioles through the first five innings, pounded the baseball for five doubles, two home runs and led 9-1.

Former Indians’ star Jim Thome had a double, homer and single in going 3 for 5. The lefty-swinging slugger hit a high, deep homer to right for the 610th of his career, tying Sammy Sosa for seventh all-time on the MLB home run list.
