Famed boxing trainer Steward, dead at 68


Emanuel (Manny) Steward, the owner of the legendary Kronk Gym and one of boxing’s greatest trainers, died last Thursday at age 68 in a Chicago hospital. Cause of death was colon cancer.

The famous trainer, an International Boxing Hall of Famer, made a name for himself by training Thomas Hearns at the Kronk Gym in Detroit, Michigan. That helped him towards working with other famous boxers-to-be, Lennox Lewis, during his long title run, and current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitscho as recently as July 2012.

Steward had an impressive record of 94 wins, 3 losses in 97 total fights.



Abbott wins third Figure Skating title at U.S. Championships

26-year-old Jeremy Abbott won his third title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, California, with a final score of 273.58.

That was the highest score ever at the U.S. championships.

Adam Rippon was second and Ross Miner finished third for a second straight year.

Abbott, who was born in Aspen, Colorado, but lives in Detroit, Michigan, was ranked 8th in the world at the end of 2011.

In other news from the championships:

Caydee Denney and John Coughlin won their first pairs title together after winning the previous two years with other partners, which is a rarity in figure skating.

LITTLE CAESARS BOWL preview: Western Michigan vs. Purdue today at 4:30 pm ET on ESPN

The former Motor City Bowl, now named the Little Caesars Bowl, will pit Western Michigan (7-5) of the Mid-American Conference against the Purdue Boilermakers (6-6) of the Big Ten Conference at Ford Field this afternoon (Dec. 27) at 4:30 pm in Detroit, Michigan.

Purdue will be making its first bowl appearance since 2007 and its second in a row to the Motor City. The Boilermakers beat Central Michigan in the bowl when it was the Motor City Bowl.

Western Michigan, while be playing a bowl game in its home state for the first time and fifth bowl game overall.

The Broncos will be getting their pro-ready QB returning from missing the season-finale against Akron because of a shoulder injury.

Carder has passed for 400 yards or more four times in 2011, and the offense operates at a high-level and fast-paced. The Broncos are third in the Mid-American Conference in total offense at 456.2 yards a game.

Western Michigan has the most dangerous passing attack in the MAC, as Carder leads the league with over 312 yards a game and a MAC-high 28 touchdown passes. He is able to throw to three top notch receivers, with the leader being Jordan White, who leads the college football in receptions (127), yards (1,646) and touchdowns (16).

Purdue’s secondary is very experienced has given opposing QB’s trouble all season.


*Purdue DT Kawann Short, led the team in tackles for a loss (17 1/2) and sacks (6 1/2) while earning team defensive MVP honors.

*Boilermakers KR Raheem Mostert, is a talented freshman who is dangerous everytime he touches the ball. Averages 31 yards per kick return with a high of 81 against Indiana in the season finale.

*WMU QB Alex Carder is a great passer and runner.

*Broncos WR Jordan White was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist who holds school records for career receiving yards, receptions and 100-yard games.

*WMU DT Drew Novak, was named the MAC defensive player of the year after collecting 83 tackles, including 20 for losses with 8.5 sacks.

Wayne State holds off Ohio Dominican, 31-24

A crowd of 1,857 at Panther Field were very disappointed as the Warriors had three players go over the 100 yards mark, two rushing, one receiving, as Wayne State University from Detroit, Michigan held off Ohio Dominican in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game, 31-24 in Columbus, Ohio.

Troy Burrell had eight catches for 163 yards, Toney Davis had 127 yards rushing on 20 carries and Josh Renel rushed 19 times for 107 yards to help their team to a 4-0 record.

Mike Noffsinger rushed for 100 yards for 2-2 ODU.

Jalen Rose starts new school in Detroit

Former Michigan Wolverines and NBA star Jalen Rose has started a new school in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

The new school is called the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, an open-enrollment, tuition-free charter school.

Rose said that 120 students have been chosen to be the first ninth-graders at the Academy.

The 38-year-old Rose, is best known for his days as a member of the FABĀ FOUR at Michigan with Chris Webber, Jimmy King, Juwan Howard and Ray Jackson.

Rose played in the NBA with Denver, Indiana, Chicago, Toronto, the Knicks and Phoenix. He scored 13,220 points, grabbed 3,193 rebounds and dished out 3,527 assists.

Rose’s biological father is Jimmy Walker, a former NBA legend in his own right. He never met his dad, but did talk to him over the phone several times.
