Roethlisberger returns as Steelers steamroll Browns, 28-10; Colt McCoy shines for Browns

When the 2010 NFL training camps opened, most NFL experts around the country felt the Steelers would be in trouble having to use backup quarterbacks Dennis Dixon, Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich during Ben Roethlisberger’s four-game suspension.

Well, the Steelers are going to overcome any adversity and they did. Even without their suspended QB Ben Roethlisberger, for violating the NFL’S personal conduct policy after a Georgia college student accused him of sexually assaulting her in a bar back in March, the team went 3-1.

Ben Roethlisberger returned Sunday for a home game against the injury-riddled Cleveland Browns and looked like he never missed a game or practice. He threw 3 touchdown passes and with the help of the defense, pushed the Steelers in control of the AFC North Division.

The Steelers are 4-1 and back in first place in the division as they will embark on a tough three-game road road trip to Miami, New Orleans and Cincinnati. Those are three cities where it is tough to win and the Steelers say they’re ready for the challenge.

The bright spot for the Cleveland Browns is that rookie QB Colt McCoy played as if he was an NFL veteran against one of the top 5 defenses in the league. Starting due to ankle injuries to veterans Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme, the former Texas Longhorns star showed why he was a Heisman candidate the past two years, going 23 of 33 passing for 281 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Byron Leftwich is reacquired by Pittsburgh to compete with Dixon and Batch at QB

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Pittsburgh Steelers, always a team that makes sure they have all of the angles covered, reacquired quarterback Byron Leftwich by dealing a seventh-round draft pick to Tampa Bay. The Steelers are making sure they have a more experienced QB around during Ben Roethlisberger’s 6 game suspension for off-the-field conduct.

Leftwich backed up Big Ben in 2008, when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. He knows offensive coordinator Bruce Arians’ system and could be ready to play September 12 when the Steelers open against Atlanta.

Pittsburgh already has third-year QB Dennis Dixon and longtime backup  Charlie Batch under contract. But Batch has been injured each of the past two years. Dixon has started only one NFL game, but will likely compete with Leftwich for the number 1 job.

The 30-year-old Leftwich played in five games for Pittsburgh in 2008, throwing for 303 yards and two touchdowns. He was 7 of 10 for 129 yards and a touchdown while replacing Roethlisberger against Washington on November 3, 2008.

The former Marshall Thundering Herd QB played for Jacksonville from 2003-2006, Atlanta in 2007 and Tampa Bay in 2009. He started the Bucs’ first three games last season before being replaced by Josh Johnson because Leftwich went on injured reserve with an elbow injury. He completed 58 of 107 passes for 594 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.
