Cole Grossman scored his first professional goal for the Crew on Tuesday night, but it was not enough as the Richmond Kickers upset Columbus 2-1 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals.

Matthew Delicate scored on a diving header in the 85th minute to give the Kickers the deciding goal at Crew Stadium.

Richmond, of the USL Pro League, broke through first on a 20-minute strike by Nozomi Hiroyama. Former Crew forward Stanley Nyazamba started the scoring play for Richmond by shoving Dejan Rusmir off the ball and spotted Hiroyama near the top left of the penalty area. Hiroyama curled a shot into the far upper netting from the top-left corner of the box.

Columbus evened the score when Grossman completed a six-pass sequence after receiving a terrific ball from Justin Meram in the 37th minute. Grossman and Meram were among five rookies in the starting lineup for the Crew.

The Crew is now 19-11-1 in Open Cup play and 11-5-1 at home.

Second half scoring sends Crew past expansion Vancouver, 2-1

The soccer match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Columbus Crew on Saturday came down to a 20-minute stretch in the second half.

During that span of time, there were three goals scored in 20 minutes, two by Columbus’ Emilio Renteria in a space of nine minutes to give his team the winning margin of 2-1.

Omar Salgado gave Vancouver hope in the game with his first career MLS tally in the 70th minute and made for an exciting finish with the Crew making several key defensive stops to gain its third win.

Salgado is the 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making, a forward who was selected first overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.

Renteria scored both goals off of his “left foot for the first time in his career”, he said.

Renteria converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute, then scored off a pass from Dejan Rusmir nine minutes later for his thrid goal of the season by slotting the ball past a stunned goalkeeper Jay Nolly from about 12 yards out.

Renteria has been hot, scoring all three of his goals this season in the past two games.

The Whitecaps kept up their relentlessness, as Salgado tried to tie the game at 2-2 in the 79th, but Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer stopped his shot.

Earlier, there was a close call, as Crew defender Josh Gardner made a goal line block on Nizar Khalfan’s shot.

The Crew ups their record to 3-1-3 while Vancouver drops to 1-4-3.

The attendance was 11,298 and the game lasted 1 hour, 51 minutes.

* The Whitecaps have not earned any points on the road as of yet.

* Vancouver beat the Crew during the pre-season in Arizona, 2-1 on February 8.

* As a United States League team, the Whitecaps never lost to an Ohio team.

* The Whitecaps are only the third MLS expansion team to win their inaugural league match, after beating Toronto FC 4-2 on March 19. The others include Chicago in 1998 and Seattle in 2009.

* On Thursday, April 28, Vancouver signed ten-year MLS veteran and former US international midfielder #33 Peter Vagenas. The 33-year-old played the last two seasons with the Seattle Sounders FC and before then, eight seasons with the LA Galaxy.

* This is Vancouver’s 36th season of professional soccer, and 25th consecutive season. They are the longest running pro soccer club in the US and Canadian history.

* Whitecaps FC are the 17th team admitted to the MLS. This is the league’s 16th season, having started up in 1996, and it now has 18 teams. When Vancouver joined the NASL in 1974, that league was starting its seventh season, and had 15 teams.

* Vancouver are looking to qualify for the playoffs for the 15th consecutive year. The Whitecaps have reached the playoffs 31 times in 35 seasons, failing only in 1974, 1975, 1994 and 1996.

* Eddie Gaven is a new dad.

* Josh Gardner made his first MLS start.
