Dayton Flyers go 4-0 on European Tour after 79-49 pasting of French Pro Team

The Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team completed a very successful exhibition tour in Europe this past week under new head coach Archie Miller.

The Flyers most recent win over ESC Trappes of the French National 2 League. UD went 4-0 on the trip, defeating the Netherlands National U-23 team, and three professional teams.

The Flyers are back home on a short break and will start classes on Wednesday, August 24.

Paul Williams scored 16 points

Senior guard Paul Williams and junior forward Josh Benson each scored 16 points to lead the Dayton attack. Senior point guard Josh Parker scored 13 points and junior guard Kevin Dillard chipped in with 11. Freshman big man Alex Gavrilov led the team in rebounding for the second straight game with 12 and Parker had a team-high seven assists.

Dillard and Parker scored in double figures in all four games. Dillard was the high scorer in the first three games and averaged 13.0 points a game. Parker was right on his heels at 11.5 per game.

Josh Benson tied for team-high honors with 16 points

Flyers have to rally to beat Antwerp in Belgium, 82-75

The Dayton Flyers were able to undefeated on their European trip due to big plays down the stretch to win 82-75 over St. Jan-Antwerp on Saturday in Antwerp, Belgium.

Dayton improved to 3-0 on the exhibition trip.

The Flyers trailed at halftime, 43-34 but were able to climb back on top in the second half.

St. Jan, one of the most successful teams in Belgium’s pro leagues, answered to regain the lead with two minutes to go in the third quarter.

But UD stopped that comeback attempt to lead by four heading into the final quarter and pushed his advantage up to as much as 13 before ending at the final margin of a seven point margin.

Kevin Dillard led the Flyers for the second time on the trip, with 13 points and seven assists. A trio of seniors also scored in double figures, Josh Parker (12 points), Columbus, Ohio native Chris Johnson (12 points) and Luke Fabrizius (10 points).

Freshman big man Alex Gavrilovic led the team with nine rebounds.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: UD recruit Robinson of Northland leads AAU team to title

The All-Ohio Red 17-and-under basketball team won its fourth AAU national title for that age group in five years, beating the Memphis YOMCA, 60-48 in Orlando, Florida, earlier this month.

6-foot-9 inch University of Dayton recruit Jalen Robinson, and Dunbar High School Wolverines standout Deontae “Teddy” Hawkins played big roles coming off the bench during the tournament.

The Dayton Flyers have offered Hawkins a scholarship, according to most recruiting sources.

Derenbecker, ex-LSU basketball player, chooses UD Flyers

The Dayton Flyers have added a player that they probably didn’t know they would be getting.

Former LSU forward Matt Derenbecker has decided to start fresh and has pick the University of Dayton to continue his college career.

Derenbecker started 16 games for Louisiana State University as a true freshman last season. He averaged 6.5 points in 32 games, with a season-high 19 points against Mississippi.

The 6-foot-7 transfer can start practicing right away with the Flyers when basketball starts on October 15.

But he is not expected to start playing games until the 2012-2013 season.

The Dayton Flyers are a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Flyers’ Williams named team’s best defender

Dayton Flyers junior guard Paul Williams was named the winner of the Best Defender Award.

Williams always drew the opponent’s best and toughest backcourt assignment in starting 34 of the 36 games he played.

At 6’4 and 206 pounds, he has the length to cover smaller point guards and the strength to handle bigger players. Williams also averaged 8.4 points and 2.8 rebounds (the best rebounding average of any of Dayton’s guards).

First presented in 1994-95, the Best Defender Award is determined by the coaching staff.
