The National Hockey League has suspended Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook for three games for a hit he made on St. Louis Blues center David Backes on Saturday.

The Blues simply have the Blue Jackets number

COLUMBUS, O. — The theme of the Columbus Blue Jackets thus far this season is S-L-O-W  S-T-A-R-T-S and head coach Todd Richards blasted the team earlier in the week in a loss at Minnesota.

So in Thursday’s home game against Central Division rival St. Louis, you’d expect a great game from the team against a hated rival?

The team did the opposite, again!

After playing well for the first three shifts of the game, the Blue Jackets found themselves trailing again 1-0 at the 2:19 mark as Blues defenseman Barret Jackman used screens by his teammates to float a puck past goalie Sergei Bobrovsky from the blueline.

St. Louis was not done yet.

Center Patrik Berglund scored at 10:23 on a power-play goal for a 2-0 advantage and Bobrovsky’s night was done when rookie right winger Vladimir Tarasenko scored a goal while falling backwards after running into CBJ defenseman James Wisniewski. An upset Richards had seen enough, as he put it in the postgame, “Sergei has to get better and I wanted to shock the team by switching goaltenders.”

Entering the game was Steve Mason, who the fans are lukewarm with due to his past failures, but on this night, he was a hero playing solid and confident stopping all 13 shots by the Blues.

The fourth goal by the Blues was scored by right winger David Backes, an empty-netter with 21 seconds to go.

Derick Brassard scored the Blue Jackets only goal

CBJ center Derick Brassard scored the lone CBJ goal on a power-play at 16;51 of the second period to make the score 3-1. The team could not get anything else past goalie Brian Elliott who always seems to beat Columbus as a backup goaltender.

The game had a common thread, the Blue Jackets lost to the Blues again, going 8-2 in the last 10, 5-2-0 at Nationwide Arena, 5-2-0 in the past 7 in Columbus and overall 31-25-13.

The game had several fights which are common in division games with several players getting game misconducts, Jared Boll of Columbus and Ryan Reaves of St. Louis.

The crowd of 11,155 fans went left the arena unhappy again with the Blue Jackets dropping another home game.

MEGASPORTSNEWS.COM STARS OF THE GAME:

*Barret Jackman, D, Blues: Got his team off to a good start in a road contest early.

*Brian Elliott, G, Blues: Survived on 25 shots allowing only one goal, but the CBJ kept him undersieged.

*Steve Mason, G, Blue Jackets: Looked quick in goal and confident. The only real bright spot from the game for the home team.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been playing several playoff-bound teams expecting to win in matchups against them but they keep pulling off wins with a rookie goaltender and a stud defensive corp.

Over the weekend, the defeated the St. Louis Blues, 5-2.

Even in losing the Blues clinched their first Central Division title since the 1999-2000 season. St. Louis is second in the Western Conference behind Vancouver.

R.J. Umberger who has been on a scoring and assist binge lately, scored twice and 22-year-old rookie goalie Allen York made it three wins in three career starts for the Jackets. He finished with 34 saves.

Jared Boll, Derek Dorsett and Vinny Prospal also scored for Columbus.

David Backes and David Perron scored for the Blues.

The crowd of 19,150 was the Blues’ 23rd sellout of the season.

St. Louis beats Blue Jackets, 4-1

(megasportsnews.com photo)

The Columbus Blue Jackets knew when they went to St. Louis that the Blues were looking for revenge for the 8-1 dumping they took at Nationwide Arena on November 10.

The Jackets looked anything but a hockey team as the Blues had it relatively easy for 60 minutes in a 4-1 win at the Scottrade Center.

Columbus fumbled the puck, had several unforced turnovers and they allowed three power-play goals and were o-for-8 with the man advantage themselves. So the power-play has still not found a cure.

It was the sixth loss in the past seven games.

Alex Steen, Jay McClement, Vladimir Sobotka and David Backes scored for St. Louis.

Jan Hejda scored for Columbus.
