2010 NFL season kicks off with a familiar matchup: Minnesota at New Orleans

The 2010 NFL season is upon with the opening game Thursday night from the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, with Minnesota once again visiting New Orleans. It’s a rematch of the 2009 NFC championship game which New Orleans won on their way to a Super Bowl title.

If everyone recalls, the Vikings outplayed the Saints in several stat categories and might’ve won the game if they hadn’t committed five turnovers, three fumbles and two interceptions.

Brett Favre Minnesota (NFL)

Drew Brees New Orleans (NFL)

There is plenty of interest in the game because of the return of QB Brett Favre of Minnesota, who is starting his 20th season despite having surgery on his left ankle during the offseason. The controversial Favre almost retired for the third time.

Minnsota will need a strong defensive effort to stop the Saints explosive and speedy offense. The Vikings led the NFL with 48 sacks last season, led by defensive end Jared Allen’s 14 1/2. They’ll have to put pressure on QB Drew Brees.

The New Orleans offensive unit led the NFL in 2009 in total yards with 403.8 per game.

The Saints defensive unit has three new starters with free safety Malcolm Jenkins, holding the fort until All-Pro Darren Sharper continues his rehabilitation from offseason knee surgery.

Minnesota is without two of their key offensive players, WR Sidney Rice is injured and third-down back Chester Taylor went to Chicago for more playing time.
