Indianapolis — The 18th running of the Brickyard 400 presented by BigMachineRecords.com came down to Paul Menard pulling the upset victory over Jeff Gordon and Regan Smith.

But Gordon was happy to finish second because his car ran fantastic all race long.

He finished second due to the fact that he had fallen behind by 12 seconds on a late pit stop but tried to make it up and hoped that Menard would run out of gas, which he didn’t.

Regan Smith, who won his first-ever NASCAR race this year at Darlington, finished third.

Until this season, Smith, driving the #78 Furniture Row Chevrolet had never before finished in the top-10 of NASCAR’s top-tier series. But he now has the Daytona 500, the Southern 600, the Coca Cola 600 and the Brickyard 400 to his credit.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule moves into the South Carolina, city of Darlington for the Showtime Southern 500 race tonight at 7:30 p.m. on FOX-TV.

Darlington Raceway is known as “The Lady in Black” and “The track too tough to tame.”

The 500-mile race will consist of 367 laps on the 1.366 mile track. There will be 60,000 to 75,000 fans in attendance.

The first paved speedway to host NASCAR events, Darlington was built in 1950 and has become known as the toughest track on the circuit. Few drivers avoid leaving a race without a dent, scrape or scratches on their cars, which is due to the tight corners on turns 3 and 4.

Darlington has a unique egg shape is due as the result of a fish story. To be able to buy land for the track, developer Harold Brasington had to assure landowner Sherman Ramsey that a small minnow pond outside of what is now Turn 4 would not be disturbed or destroyed. To save the pond, which is known as Ramsey’s Pond, they had to build the west turns a little tighter than the other end.

Recapping the 2010 Showtime Southern 500, Denny Hamlin and Jeff Gordon led 214 of the 367 laps. Hamlin, who won the Nationwide Series race the day before, led 104 laps, grabbed the lead from Jeff Burton with 24 laps remaining in the race and held him off to complete a weekend sweep. Kurt Busch finished third, and Gordon was fourth.
