Demps latest Olympic sprinter to get NFL contract

There have been several Olympic sprinters to try their hand in the National Football League.

Back in 1968, 100-meter gold medalist Jim Hines, who was nicknamed “Oops” for his bad hands as a receiver to 1964 when Bob Hayes became a Hall of Famer for the Dallas Cowboys as a wide receiver to Renaldo Nehemiah.

The latest is Olympic silver medalist Jeff Demps, who signed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots. He is currently on injured reserved and could be out for the season.

The former running back at the University of Florida, was part of the United States’ 4 x 100-meter relay team in London.

Whetstone grad Owusu-Ansah getting another chance with NFL’s Cowboys

Defensive back Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, a graduate of Columbus Whetstone High School of the City League, is getting a second chance with the Dallas Cowboys.

A 2010 fourt-round pick by Dallas, was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Owusu-Ansah, drafted as a cornerback prospect out of Indiana, Pa., he was moved to safety and then to wide receiver before being released by the Cowboys last season.

Bengals trade Rivers; Newman signing official; Murray cut

The much-rumored trade between the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants involving linebacker Keith Rivers has become a reality.

The Bengals traded the former USC star for a fifth-round draft pick, ending a four-year stint in Cincinnati, on the sidelines frequently with injuries.

Rivers missed all of last season recovering from surgery on his right wrist.

He’s played in only 35 games out of a possible 64 in four seasons.

Cincinnati also agreed to a deal with 33-year-old cornerback Terence Newman, an unrestricted free agent from the Dallas Cowboys.

The Bengals have waived cornerback Rico Murray, who has signed on several ocassions as an emergency player when injuries crop up in the secondary.

Reports say Bengals sign CB Newman

 

Reports are surfacing that the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms with former Dallas Cowboys CB Terence Newman.

Dallas recently cut Newman, is another former first-round pick signed by the Bengals during this off-season.

In his nine seasons with Dallas, Newman started 131 games and recorded 112 passes defensed and 32 interceptions.

Last season, Newman started all 14 games he played and had four picks, including a 43-yard interception-return touchdown.

Newman will be re-united with Mike Zimmer, the Bengals defensive coordinator, who was his coach in Dallas.

Newman will probably be a back-up player and gives the Bengals’ defensive backfield depth with Leon Hall recovering from an Achilles injury.

Reports say Bengals looking at former Dallas CB Newman

There are reports out of Cincinnati and the internet, that the Cincinnati Bengals are taking a look at and trying to sign 33-year-old cornerback Terence Newman who was let go by the Dallas Cowboys recently.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis speaking at the NFL owners meetings, believes that Newman can become a solid defensive back again if he can be reunited with Mike Zimmer, who coached him while with Dallas. Zimmer, currently is the defensive coordinator of the Bengals.

Newman, is a 2003 graduate of Kansas State and played for the Cowboys from that time through 2011.

In his career, Newman has 532 tackles and 32 interceptions.
