Ohio Bobcats 75 Hampton Pirates 67; Offutt scores 23 for Ohio

 

Former Ohio State player, Walter Offutt, who has found a home with Ohio University, scored 23 points last night in his team’s 75-67 win over 0-3 Hampton University.

The Bobcats are 4-0 to start the new season.

Offutt (Indianapolis, Ind.) connected on four of his 12 field goal attempts but made his way to the free-throw line 15 times, sinking 13 shots from the stripe. He was joined in double figures by Ivo Baltic’s 16 points and D.J. Cooper’s 12. David Bruce led all scorers for Hampton, scoring 20 points while also grabbing 12 boards.

Ohio shot 21-of-49 (42.9 percent) from the field and connected on 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) of its shots from distance. The Bobcats were able to force the Pirates into 24 turnovers, taking advantage of these miscues by scoring 32 points from them. Ohio swatted away eight Hampton shots in the win.

The Pirates shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) including a 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range. Hampton out-rebounded Ohio by 17, collecting 43 rebounds to Ohio’s 26.

Ohio gets past arch-rival Miami, 63-54; locks up first round bye in MAC tourney

Grove City graduate Jon Smith scored a career-high 13 points, but it was the D.J. Cooper show as the Ohio Bobcats won for the 24th time by a 63-54 score over Miami.

The RedHawks under Charlie Coles are 9-20, 5-11 in the MAC and he is hinting at retirement.

The win gives the Bobcats a first round bye in the MAC tournament.

D.J. Cooper scored 14 points and broke the Ohio University career assists record.

Cooper also had five steals, four rebounds and four assists in breaking Dennis Whitaker’s mark of 651 assists, which had been on the record books since 1980. Cooper has 654 for Ohio 24-7, 11-5.

Ohio beats Marshall in CollegeInsider.com tournament

The Ohio Bobcats traveled to Huntington, West Virginia to take on an old rival, the Marshall Thundering Herd in the CollegeInsider.com basketball tournament.

D.J. Cooper’s layup with 1:30 to go provided the final points and gave the Bobcats a 65-64 win in the first-round of the tourney.

DeVaughn Washington led the Bobcats (19-15) with 17 points and Cooper had 10 points with nine assists.

Ohio trailed 36-33 at the half.

Tirrell Baines had 18 points and Damier Pitts 17 for Marshall and Nigel Spikes grabbed 19 rebounds as the The Herd ends the year at 22-12.

Ball State slips past Ohio in overtime

Jesse Berry, a former University of Dayton recruit until he got into trouble last spring, led Ball State to a 76-73 win over Ohio University in overtime in the MAC tournament.

Ohio was led by D.J. Cooper with 19 points.

Ball State moves to 19-12 while Ohio falls to 18-15.

Ohio blasts Akron, 80-55

The Ohio Bobcats blasted the Akron Zips in Mid-American Conference action, 80-55.

D.J. Cooper scored 25 points, including a career-high seven three-pointers, to lead the Bobcats effort.

Ohio, who shot 51.8 percent from the floor.

OU went on a 22-2 run with score tied-up at 18 to lead 44-22 at the half.

Ohio goes to 17-13, 9-6, while Akron drops to 19-11, 9-6.
