After long injury layoff, Nadal wins in first match back on tennis court

Rafael Nadal spent seven months away from the game of tennis to recuperate from a knee injury.

In his return to the courts, he looked like the Nadal of old, winning his first match of the year.

The 26-year-old Spaniard partnered with Juan Monaco to beat the Czech Republic pairing of Frantisek Cermak and Lukas Diouhy 6-3, 6-2 at the VTR tournament in Chile.

Nadal, who has won over $50 million in prize money on tour, had not played since June 28, 2012 when he was upset in the second round at Wimbledon.

Spain to host USA in Davis Cup match in September

Spain will be hosting the United States in one Davis Cup semifinal in the coastal city of Gijon.

The matches will be played on an outdoor red clay court on September 14-16.

The other semifinal match will be played in Buenos Aires between the Czech Republic and Argentina.

13-year veteran Hejduk staying with the NHL’s Avalanche

Milan Hejduk, right winger for the Colorado Avalanche is one of their last remaining links to the franchise’s Stanley Cup days.

He has spent all of his 13 years with the NHL team.

The native of the Czech Republic will remain in Denver for at least one more year as he signed a new contract.

The captain is 36 years old and was drafted 87th overall in the 1994 NHL Draft.

Hejduk has played in 991 games, with 794 points. He is fourth in franchise goals with 371 and fifth in assists with 423.

Prospal given one-year contract extension by Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIOThe Columbus Blue Jackets have signed left wing Vinny Prospal to a one-year contract extension through the 2012-13 season, according to club Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Howson.

Prospal, 36, has registered nine goals and 24 assists for 33 points and 18 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Blue Jackets this season. He ranks second on the club in points and is third (tied) in goals. He was signed as a free agent by Columbus on July 23, 2011.

“We are very excited to have Vinny signed for another year,” said Howson. “His leadership and play on the ice have certainly been positives for us this season.”

Philadelphia’s second pick, 71st overall, in the 1993 Entry Draft, Prospal made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 1996-97 and has collected 236-477-713 and 531 penalty minutes in 1,031 career games with Philadelphia, Ottawa, Florida, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, NY Rangers and Columbus during his 14-plus NHL seasons. He has registered five 20-goal seasons, eight campaigns with 50 or more points and missed just 13 games in eight seasons from 2001-10, appearing in 643-of-656 contests during that span.  He has also appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs nine times, tallying 10-25-35 and 26 penalty minutes in 65 games.

The Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic native has represented his country in international competition on several occasions, including at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. He played in the 2004 and 2005 World Championships, winning the gold medal in 2005, and in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey tournament. Prospal also represented the Czech Republic at the 1994 and 1995 World Junior Championships.

Czech Republic beats USA in world junior hockey tournament

Petr Holik scored the tiebreaker goal in the third period, and Petr Mrazek made 52 saves to lead the Czech Republic to a 5-2 win over the United States in the junior world hockey championships over the weekend in Edmonton.

The loss sends the U.S. at 0-2 to the relegation pool against Canada in the next round.
