OSU comes back to beat Northwestern, 7-2

Game story from Christopher Henderson

The Ohio State Buckeyes baseball team has a different makeup this year and its just not in the coaching staff.

On the field, the Buckeyes will have to play almost a perfect game. They will not be able to blow teams off the field because they lost six star players from Bob Todd’s final team. They lost several key players to the Major League Baseball draft, ace pitcher Alex Wimmers in the first round to the Minnesota Twins, catcher Dan Burkhart, left fielder Zach Hurley and second baseman Cory Kovanda.

Case-in-point was new head coach Greg Beals’ first Big Ten win over Northwestern. Ohio State scored four runs in the seventh inning without getting the ball out of the infield in the comeback win of 7-2 in Bill Davis Stadium.

OSU starter Drew Rucinski allowed five hits and struck out five in taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. However, the Wildcats started to zero in on Rucinski’s pitches. Northwestern designated hitter Jack Livingston had a lead-off triple off the centerfield wall. Geoff Rowan followed with a run-scoring single to left. Later in the inning, Rowan scored on an infield single by Patrick Miller and the Bucks were trailing 2-1.

Wildcats starting pitcher Luke Farrell was just as stingy on the Buckeyes. But they got to him and scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to take back the lead for good at 5-2.

The interesting inning stacked up this way. The first run scored when David Corna was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, the second came across on a wild pitch, the third on an infield single by Brian DeLucia and the fourth on a passed ball.

The win upped OSU to 9-10 on the season.

Ohio State bounced back from a four-run deficit to gain a badly-needed, 8-4 win over the pesky Illinois Fighting Illini in the third game of the series at Bill Davis Stadium. With the Sunday win, the Buckeyes move to .500 in the Big Ten Conference with a 9-9 record.  Overall, the Buckeyes move to 25-19 while putting to rest a season-long five-game losing streak.

Illinois wins the three-game series, 2 games to 1, but drops to 8-10 with the loss and to 23-22 overall.

Senior Ryan Dew led a 15-hit attack for the Buckeyes with a home run, double and two singles plus he had a career-high five RBI’s. Dew’s Worthington Kilbourne High School teammate, senior Cory Kovanda, had four hits and two runs scored while Zach Hurley and Michael Stephens had two hits apiece. Hurley also scored two runs.

Illinois, as it had done all series, scored first and went up early in the game 4-0.

While the Buckeyes were mounting their comeback, Theron Minium was shutting down the Illini bats from scoring in 3 innings of two-hit, relief work. He picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Senior Eric Best pitched the final three innings to pick up his third save of the year. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four.

Buckeye Pitchers Bounce Back, Top Marshall 7-4

MEGASPORTSNEWS.COM GAME COVERAGE

Columbus, Ohio – You needed a program to keep track of the number of funks that the baseball Buckeyes snapped out of Wednesday night, as they topped Marshall 7-4.  OSU had lost four of their last five, and been thrashed 14-3 last year and 17-1 earlier this year by the Thundering Herd.  The Buckeyes, who had given up 32 runs in their last two games against Penn State, are now  23-13.  Marshall is 20-22, losing their second game in as many days, after winning seven straight.

Zach Hurley (osu)

Freshman Brett McKinney bounced back from a four-run/three walk/no-outs-recorded relief appearance Sunday against Penn State, allowing no hits and two walks in a five-inning start.  Theron Minium and Jared Strayer followed McKinney and gave up two hits each, and were helped by double plays in the 6th and 7th.

The Buckeyes roughed up Ben Frith for five runs in the first.  Michael Stephens’ groundout scored Zach Hurley, who led off the game with his team-leading 17th double.  Ryan Dew singled in Cory Kovanda, and two batters later, Brian DeLucia crushed a three-run homer to left center.  DeLucia’s 38 RBI’s lead the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes loaded the bases on three singles in the 7th, and scored twice on Mike Cavilli wild pitches.  Marshall scored their first run on a Strayer wild pitch in the 8th.  The Herd’s Rhett Stafford singled in two runs in the 9th, and Eric Semeniuk another off Eric Best, but Best struck out Kris Hecktor with two on to end the game.

GAME NOTES:

* The Buckeyes have now won five of six games when Brian DeLucia has hit a home run. The only game Ohio State did not win was the middle game against Indiana when the junior hit a grand slam.

* Ohio State moved to 10-2 on the season when leading after the first inning.

* DeLucia leads the Buckeyes with nine multiple RBI games this season and six in his last nine games.

* The Buckeyes moved to 16-2 against Marshall all-time after dropping the last two against the Thundering Herd.

* Hurley extended his team-leading hitting streak to 13 games.

*Cory Rupert has now reached base safely in all 26 starts this season.
