Stallings, sore ribs and all, shoots 66 to lead Memorial’s first round action

Most PGA Tour fans may not know much about Scott Stallings, if anything at all.

The 27-year-old Stallings is a graduate of Tennessee Tech University of Cookeville, Tennessee, which is in the Nashville area. He turned pro in 2007 and has one win on the PGA Tour, the Greenbrier Classic in July of 2011. That is the extent of his pro golf career.

The golf world knows him now, because he the first round leader of the 2012 Memorial Tournament, shooting a 6-under-par 66.

Stallings showed his mettle with a birdie on the most-difficult hole on the course, the 18th, with a 2-foot putt. He leads by one-stroke over Spencer Levin and Erik Compton.

It’s a good human interest story that Stallings is able to lead any tournament or even play golf in his position due to the injury he has.

In late January of this year, he suffered torn cartilage in five ribs and it took the injury awhile to be diagnosed properly.

After taking off a month to rest his injury, Stallings came back and has had mixed results. His high point was finishing 27th in the Masters tournament and he hasn’t made a cut since then.

Ribs injuries has no real therapy or surgery. It has to heal on its own.

For golfers, the injury is very nagging and troublesome because of the torque put on the body when they have to drive the ball for distance.

Kevin Murphy of Tennessee Tech became the first player in NCAA Division I this season to hit the 50-point mark in a game.

Murphy set a Tennessee Tech single-game scoring record with 50 points in an Ohio Valley Conference contest as the Golden Eagles beat the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars in Cookeville, Tennessee, 98-80 on Monday night.

Murphy broke the previous record of 38 points by John Best by making 16 of 21 from the field, 6 of 9 from 3-point land and 12 of 14 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles are 14-9, 6-4 OVC and had a good night shooting from the floor with 55 percent.

The Cougars dropped to 5-14, 3-7 OVC and have now lost six games in a row.

SIU-Edwardsville were led in scoring by Jerome Jones with 25 points and Mark Yelovich with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
