Wannstedt quits under pressure at Pittsburgh

Dave Wannstedt is very popular with alumni, fans and the University of Pittsburgh’s administration. He had a record of 42-31 record in six seasons on the sidelines.

But Wannstedt suffered upset losses to Ohio University and Bowling Green and he never was able to lead the Panthers to a Bowl Championship Series game and that did not sit well with athletics director Steve Pederson who said despite the record, the program was underachieving.

Wannstedt resigned recently after a disappointing season with a 7-5 record and qualified for a minor bowl on January 8 against Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama at Legion Field. Pederson felt that with the Big East being somewhat weak this year, the Panthers should’ve won it instead of finishing in a three-way tie with Connecticut and West Virginia. The Panthers were favored to win the conference during the preseason.

Wannstedt is expected to stay on with the school in a non-coaching position.

Most sports fans might not know, but Wannstedt is a Pittsburgh grad and former offensive lineman who blocked for Heisman Trophy winning running back Tony Dorsett in the 1970′s.

Pederson decided to make a change at the head coaching position before the bowl games because all of the top candidates would be gone after the bowl games end. Also, he wants a coach in place due to recruiting and the national letter-of-intent signing day.

Dion Lewis (courtesy of Pittsburgh athletics)

Dion Lewis ran for a career-high 261 yards and four touchdowns on a snow-covered field at Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium in leading Pittsburgh to a 28-10 win over the dethroned Big East champion Bearcats.

Pittsburgh upped its record to 7-5 and finished the season at 5-2 and a share of the Big East title with West Virginia and Connecticut.

The Bearcats in a disappointing season, finishes at 4-8, 2-5 in the Big East in head coach Butch Jones’ first season.

Lewis scored a touchdown on the opening game of the second quarter . He held his arms high to the sky in the corner of the end zone by the student section and was pelted with snowballs. The students were warned to stop.

The Bearcats mascot was throwing snowballs and resisted, pushing security personnel. The mascot was detained, cited for disorderly conduct and replaced by another mascot at halftime, according to school officials.

Game 12 Preview: Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio

The Big Game will be upon us with one more day to go.

Michigan invades Ohio Stadium on Saturday to play Ohio State.

Game time is 12 noon and the game will be aired on ABC-TV.

Michigan enters the yearly-war with a 3-4 record in the Big Ten and 7-4 overall after winning two of its last three games.

The Wolverines are coming off a 48-28 loss at home to Wisconsin last Saturday after winning two in a row over Illinois (67-65 in 3 OT’s) and Purdue (27-16).

Michigan started the season 5-0 with wins over Connecticut, at Notre Dame, Massachusetts, Bowling Green and at Indiana. They could’ve easily lost to Notre Dame, Massachusetts and Indiana, but came through with late rallies to win.

Much-maligned head coach Rich Rodriguez is in his third year in Ann Arbor with a 15-19 mark and a 120-81-2 record overall as a head coach. Despite all the criticism about his coaching abilities, Rodriguez has the Wolverines bowl eligible for the first time in his three-year tenure as coach.

Before taking the Michigan job, he spent seven seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, West Virginia where he went 60-26, won four Big East titles and took the Mountaineers to two BCS bowls.

With Saturday’s win at Iowa, Ohio State became the first team in Big Ten history to win at least 10 games in six consecutive seasons.

Saturday’s contest will be the 107th meeting in the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan.

Ohio state has won the last five meetings with Michigan and 8 of the last 9 overall. Michigan has not won in Columbus since 2000.

If Ohio State wins on Saturday, it can claim a share of the Big Ten championship with Wisconsin and Michigan State.
