The MLS expansion draft is coming up soon and the Columbus Crew like many teams have decisions to make on who to protect and who not to protect.

The Crew have decided to leave Andres Mendoza, and free agents Emmanuel Ekpo and Kevin Burns.

Ekpo and Burns don’t have contracts for next year but the Crew can still negotiate a new deal with both until the end of the month.

Most fans will say why not protect Mendoza, the team’s leading scorer and highest-paid player.

Mendoza, who according to the players’ union, made $595,000 this past season, probably makes too much money for an expansion team to pick. He scored 13 goals which placed him fourth in Major League Soccer.

The newest MLS team for 2012 will be the Montreal Impact.

The Montreal Impact Football Club has been in existence since 1992 as a member of the NASL, National American Soccer League. Their owner is Joey Saputo, the head coach is Nick De Santis. They play in Saputo Stadium which seats 13,034.

Montreal will have 10 selections in the draft on Wednesday and can select one player from each team.

The Crew have lost players in each of the past five expansion drafts.

Will Robbie Rogers return to the Columbus Crew in 2012 or will be play overseas?

That is the big question surrounding one of the Crew’s most popular players who is looking for a new contract.

The Crew midfielder will be training for the next two weeks in Germany at the advice of U.S. national head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Rogers will train with Bundesliga club Kaiserslautern.

In 81 Major League Soccer games, Rogers has scored 12 goals.

With the United States national team in 17 games, he has two goals.

Union shuts down Crew, 1-0; MLS East tightens up

The Columbus Crew took a trip to the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, Pennsylvania, and came back empty-handed. No goals, no points, nothing!

The Union scored on a first half breakaway goal and never caught steam in losing 1-0.

Sebastien Le Toux scored the game’s lone goal in the 32nd minute to give Philadelphia their first win in 9 games.

The Crew drops to 11-10-8, 41 points on the season. They are very fortunate to still be in first place in the East as second-place Sporting Kansas City lost to Real Salt Lake.

The Crew returns home this Saturday to host Major League Soccer’s best team, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
