Crew dominates Toronto FC, 2-0 to win Trillium Cup; Higuain scores twice again to put team back in playoff hunt

A few weeks ago, the Columbus Crew were 10 points out of playoff contention and the fans wanted the management to fire head coach Robert Warzycha.

Now after a couple of shutout victories over New York and Toronto FC, the fans are happy again and the team is back in the playoff hunt.

The reason for the turnaround is the play of Federico Higuain, who the past two seasons is the new Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Higuain can score from anywhere on the field if his teammates give him the ball. Teams have to account for his whereabouts at all time. Playing with the Crew’s other scoring threat Dominic Oduro, the field opens up for goals to be scored.

Higuain, the 28-year-old Argentinian as the team’s captain has taken over the last few games by scoring four goals and has given Crew fans a hope for the playoffs.

The Crew with 29 points, trail only New England and Chicago for the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Saturday’s win allowed the Crew to win their fifth Trillium Cup in six years in the rivalry with Toronto FC.

The triumph also allowed Warzycha to tie his former coach, Tom Fitzgerald (1996-2001) at 70 wins as a Crew head coach. The 70th win makes Warzycha one of only 14 MLS coaches to achieve the plateau and four are active: Sigi Schmid (Seattle), Jason Kreis (Real Salt Lake), Bruce Arena (LA Galaxy) and Dominic Kinnear (Houston).

Columbus Crew in a bad streak; playoffs slipping away

New Crew owner Anthony Precourt says he wants to get a good sense of the entire operation before making changes (megasportsnews.com photo)

For years, the Columbus Crew were always one of those teams in Major League Soccer that could be counted on to have a winning overall record, a winning home record, a cinch for the playoffs and a contender for the league championship.

The 2013 season hasn’t been anything near the abovementioned statements.

The Crew are in the midst of one their worst runs on the losing side in team history.

With last weekend’s loss at Houston, Columbus has dropped six of seven games. They are now in unfamiliar territory of eighth-place in the MLS’ Eastern Division. They have fallen 10 points out of the final playoff spot with 12 games left in the season.

The current 1-6 stretch is the worst since a 0-5-2 by the Crew in the disappointing 2006 season.

Recently, the team was sold by the Hunt Sports Corporation to Anthony Precourt.

The new owner told the media at his introductory press conference a few days ago that he will not make any quick decisions on anybody in the organization. He wants to get an overall assessment of the situation.

Head coach Robert Warzycha, who has been on the hot seat all season with the fans, is in the final year of his contract. Precourt did indicate that he would be meeting with general manager Mark McCullers, technical director Brian Bliss and Warzycha to see where they can improve the team.

When Robert Warzycha was a player with the Columbus Crew, he was a fan favorite.

They appreciated his hard work and team player mentally.

When he became an assistant coach, everybody knew he was being groomed for the head job in the future.

His first chance occured when Greg Andrulis was fired during the 2005 season and Warzycha became the interim head coach. The team played better under Warzycha than it did under Andrulis. Rumors had it that several players quit playing for Andrulis and wanted him gone.

In 2006, Sigi Schmid was brought in and he led the Crew to the 2008 MLS championship. after that season, Schmid left to coach the Seattle Sounders and enter Warzycha as the permanent head coach.

Warzycha has been successful as the head coach, but the Crew have missed the playoffs twice during his tenure and are in danger of missing them again in 2013.

The 2013 edition of the Crew is inconsistency,  key players injured, can’t win at home, can’t score goals and are too young.

The Crew use to be tough to beat at Crew Stadium. That is no longer the case. This year they’ve dropped 18 of a possible 30 points at home with a record of 3-4-3. They’ve been shutout three times at home. And to make matters worse, they’ve lost a couple of games late, one during stoppage time.

They’re missing key players with season-ending injuries in Eddie Gaven and Glauber’. They’ve also been without Jairo Arrieta, who has been on International duty with his home country Costa Rica.

Warzycha’s job seems to be safe according to Team president and general manager Mark McCullers. The Hunt Sports Group rarely will fire any coach in the middle of the season, although they’ve done it twice before.

Warzycha is in the final year of his contract. There is a two-year option that the club can exercise at the end of the year.

The team’s play will have to improve to keep fans in the stands. If the fans go away, management will have no choice but to make a coaching change because after all, this is a business as we all know.

COLUMBUS, O. — The Columbus Crew over the years have been one of the best home teams in Major League Soccer.

But during the current season, they’ve lost games, tied games while losing points at home. They even went 7 1/2 quarters without scoring a goal before Saturday night’s game.

Trailing the Houston Dynamo, 1-0, the Crew received a break. Chad Barson, making his first start of the season, was hauled down on his way to the goal in the box by Andrew Driver. That meant a penalty kick was in the offering.

Federico Higuain was called on to do his specialty and he tied the game on the penalty kick in the 69th minute to make it 1-1. That goal ended the beforementioned scoring drought at home, 294 minutes. The last goal at home was on April 27 against DC United, also scored by Higuain on a penalty kick.

The Dynamo’s goal was scored by Wayne Creavalle in the 31st minute, his third of the campaign.

* Columbus is 4-2-9 vs. the Dynamo all-time

DYNAMO GAME NOTES:

* Houston is 6-4-4 on the season, 2-2-3 on the road

* The Dynamo are in the top 10 in the MLS in defense, allowing only 13 goals all season

* After Saturday night’s game at Columbus, the Dynamo will have 2 1/2 weeks off before their June 19 match at Montreal

Robert & Konrad Warzycha only second father/son tandem in same MLS season history

Konrad Warzycha, a former soccer player at Ohio State University, made his Columbus Crew recently when he appeared in the 85th minute vs. D.C. United.

Konrad, playing for his father, Robert, marked the first time since September 14, 2002 that a Crew player with the last name Warzycha played in front of the Crew Stadium crowd for the Black & Gold during a regular-season game.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Robert and Konrad became the second father (coach) / son (player) tandems in the same season in MLS history, joining Bob and Michael Bradley in the 2004 and 2005 season with New York.
