CITY LEAGUE NORTH DIVISION FOOTBALL: In rivalry game, Brookhaven beats Beechcroft, 34-7

One of the top rivalries in the Columbus City League is the Brookhaven-Beechcroft athletic contests in all sports.

But the main sports is Football and Basketball.

The games are generally close and there are no secrets as the two schools know each other well.

Friday night’s football game at Beechcroft was an exception as the Bearcats rolled to a 34-7 win.

The victory allowed Brookhaven to keep ahead of Northland in the North Division at 5-0, 6-2 overall.

Beechcroft is a rare 4-4 overall, 2-3 in the North and were held to just 98 yards of total offense.

Bearcats WR Keandre Powell caught three passes for 106 yards and returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdowns.

Also starring for Brookhaven, Terry Barker who caught two scoring passes.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE BOYS BASKETBALL: Reynoldsburg beats Eastmoor Academy

The Eastmoor Academy Warriors took a break from Columbus City League action to play the Reynoldsburg Raiders.

The Warriors ran into a buzzsaw as the host Raiders won 54-35.

Wendell Davis led Reynoldsburg of the Ohio Capital Conference with 20 points in improving to 12-1 on the season.

Eastmoor Academy drops to 7-5 on the season.

John Draper led the Warriors in points with 12.

The first quarter was close at 11-10 with the Raiders leading. In the second quarter, the Warriors only managed 7 points as Reynoldsburg led at halftime, 30-17. Eastmoor never recovered after halftime.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Hale leads Beechcroft past Dublin Jerome

Beechcoft QB Maurice Hale showed why he is one of the top quarterbacks in the Columbus City League, by throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns in an 18-10 win over Dublin Jerome, who falls to 0-2.

Hale rushed for 117 yards for the Cougars who built up a comfortable 18-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jerome had on bright spot, blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown with two minutes left in the game.

 

 

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Marion-Franklin holds off Brookhaven, 20-14

Friday night saw an epic battle between two of the Columbus City League’s premier football programs, Marion-Franklin from the South Division and Brookhaven from the North side of town.

The Red Devils controlled much of the game but the Bearcats mounted a comeback which fell short.

Brookhaven scored the tying touchdown late in the game, but had the play nullified.

On the next play, Bearcats QB Kevin Greenhow was intercepted by the Red Devils’ Joe Alverson to seal the game at 20-14 for Marion-Franklin.

The Red Devils outrushed Brookhaven 102-55. Greenhow threw for 2 touchdowns and 200 yards.

Doubleheader today on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE: 11:00 am, Northland vs. Reynoldsburg; 3:00 pm, Walnut Ridge plays Olentangy Liberty

HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE will be busy today as we broadcast two games from the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.

At 11:00 am, the Northland Vikings take on the Reynoldsburg Raiders in one District final while the Walnut Ridge Scots play the Olentangy Liberty Patriots in the other final at 3:oo pm.

The Vikings, six-time defending champions of the Columbus City League, brings a 22-1 record into the game, having beaten Central Crossing, Columbus West and Zanesville in the Marysville region.

The Raiders, of the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division, bring a 12-9 record into the contest having won two OHSAA playoff games over Olentangy Orange and Hilliard Davidson also in the Marysville region.

This afternoon at 3:00 pm, the Olentangy Liberty Patriots will take on the Walnut Ridge Scots.

The Patriots from Powell, Ohio, play in the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division where they were the champions.

Liberty has only lost to Westerville Central, 49-46 and Westerville South, 58-57 and are 20-2 on the season.

Columbus City League runner-ups, the Walnut Ridge Scots are 21-1 on the season, the only blemish being a loss to the Northland Vikings in the City League championship game.

The City League South Division champion Scots have advanced to the District finals by beating Whetstone and two other Ohio Capital Conference schools in Worthington Kilbourne and Mount Vernon.
