Former Dayton Flyers star Johnson, getting a good look from NBA teams

Former Columbus Brookhaven and Dayton Flyers swingman, Chris Johnson has been getting a good look from NBA scouts and general managers as a possible pick in the second round of the upcoming NBA Draft.

Johnson, who was a key performer for the Flyers the past four years, averaged 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this past season. It also helped him to have played with NBA Development League player Chris Wright, who received national attention and NBA scouts during his career at UD and in the process, they were able to see the talents of Johnson.

There is some discrepency of Johnson being 6-feet-6-inches tall or 6’3. One of Johnson’s friends in Columbus told me recently that he is every bit of 6’6.

Johnson has been very impressive with his ability to handle the ball, shoot from 3-point land and his free throw shooting. He is also a solid defender.

NBA teams say that he has also been impressive in the interview process during visits.

Johnson, who is being projected as a #2 guard, has spent the past month training in New York.

UD used great ball movement to shoot 53 percent (31-58) from the field and 48 percent (11-23) from behind the 3-point arc.

Columbus Northland High School, the 2010-2011 Division I Boys state basketball tournament runnerups. dominated the University of Dayton team camp last weekend and star forward Jalen Robinson was the main reason.

The 6’9 forward came out the camp with a scholarship offer which he accepted quickly on Monday.

Robinson is one of the best players in the Columbus area and City League. He was being recruited by Florida State, Tennessee, UCLA and Wisconsin. He had a scholarship available at several mid-major schools Akron, Kent State, Ohio and Western Kentucky, but he decided on playing for the Flyers and join fellow Columbus City League alumnus, Chris Johnson of Columbus Brookhaven.

Robinson is listed by Rivals.com as one of the nation’s top-150 recruits for next season at #141. Only three Ohio players were ranked by the recruiting service.

Robinson, who averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds, is the Flyers’ first commitment for the 2012 class. UD still has four scholarships to give for that class.

Robinson’s team, Northland are the kingpins of the Columbus City League. They have not lost a City League game since 2006.
