HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Aces knock Academy out of first place tie in MSL Ohio Division with win

The Mid-State League Ohio Division basketball race has been tight all season between the Newark Catholic Green Wave and the Columbus Academy Vikings.

The two teams have been neck-and-neck with wins for the past two weeks. But that changed on Tuesday as one team won and the other lost.

Newark Catholic beat the Heath Bulldogs, 59-48 while the Granville Blue Aces surprised visiting Academy, 63-53.

With the win, the Green Wave improve to 16-2 overall, 12-1 in the division and have wrapped up a share of the MSL Ohio championship.

The Blue Aces, having an uncharacteristic 10-9, 8-5 season pulled the upset on the Vikings, putting three players in double figures scoring.

The Vikings drop to 15-4 overall, 11-2.

Academy led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

But Granville scored 17 points in the second to take a 29-19 lead at the half, holding the Vikings to a 5-point in the period.

The Blue Aces stretched their lead to 43-27 and that was basically the game.

The Vikings were led by Tim Eldridge with 16 and Zack Ratcliff with 14.

The Vikings will play on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE on Friday as they host arch-rival Bexley.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Academy gets ready for Hartley with 88-27 pasting of Lakewood

A year ago at this time, the Lakewood Lancers did not have a win at all.

But this season they’ve improved and now have five. But they were no match for the Columbus Academy Vikings on Tuesday night, in losing 88-27.

The Vikings will play Hartley tonight at home and you can hear the game on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE at 7:30 p.m.

Chris Jones’ Vikings pushed out to a 18-4 advantage in the first quarter; 43-8 at the half, 73-20 at the end of three and the game was over.

The Vikings were led by Jacob Mikalov with 17 points and Aakaash Paladuga with 12.

Academy is 14-2 overall, 11-1 in the Mid-State League Ohio Division. Lakewood drops to 5-13, 2-10.

The Columbus Academy Vikings under head coach Chris Jones are tough to beat on their home court.

On Tuesday night, the Vikings took down an old nemesis and fellow Mid-State Ohio Division rival, Newark Catholic Green Wave, 62-48.

The win improves Academy to 11-2, 7-1 while the Green Wave drop to a solid 11-2, 7-1 as well. The division comes down to these two teams.

Zach Ratcliffe scored 16 points and Daniel Aronowitz 15 to force a tie in the division.

Newark Catholic was led by Jett Speelman who knocked down 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Columbus Academy Vikings won a key Mid-State League Ohio Division game on Tuesday night.

Zach Ratcliff scored on a layup with 3.9 seconds remaining to give Academy a 68-66 road win at Licking Valley.

Jacob Mikalow led the Vikings in scoring with 17 points.

Licking Valley had a chance to tie or even win the game, but missed a half-court shot as the buzzer sounded.

Licking Valley was led by Nathan Wood with 22 points.

Academy goes to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the league and Licking Valley drops to 1-1, 0-1.

High School Basketball comes your way on a Friday night with Mid-State League, Ohio Division action between the Bexley Lions and Columbus Academy Vikings.

The Bexley Lions defeated Academy on January 21 in Bexley, 76-72.

The Lions are 10-9, 6-7 in the MSL Ohio Division. They have one of the best players in the area in 6’4 Jalen Robinette.

In their last game, they lost to Licking Valley, 42-38.

Columbus Academy comes into the game after winning their last two games, 70-57 against Licking Valley and 63-49 over Lakewood.

The Vikings are in third place in the Ohio Division with a 13-5, 9-4.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. with the pre-game getting started at 7:15 from Gahanna, Ohio.
