COLUMBUS – The Crew played its first game of the preseason Wednesday at the IMG Academy Fields in Bradenton, Fla., dropping a 2-1 decision to Malmö FF of Sweden. Crew forward Emilio Renteria struck first before Malmö responded through Mathias Ranegie and Jimmy Durmaz to overturn the deficit in a match that consisted of three 45-minute segments.

The Black & Gold got on the board right away, as Dilly Duka dribbled down the field and took a strong shot on goal in the first minute. Malmö goalkeeper Johan Fahlin made the save, then another on Renteria’s first follow, but the Venezuelan’s second effort found the back of the net.

In the 24th minute the Swedes equalized, when midfielder Erik Friberg picked up a rebound off a corner kick cleared by Andy Gruenebaum and found an open Ranegie who proceeded to fire the ball past the Crew keeper. Five minutes later Durmaz volleyed another corner kick clearance past Gruenebaum for a 2-1 lead.

Malmö nearly increased its advantage in the 33rd minute, but Duka was quick to clear the ball off the line – and two minutes later he initiated the play that almost resulted in an equalizer. The Crew midfielder brought the ball down the left side and found an open Cole Grossman who barely missed his chance.

Cole Grossman scored his first professional goal for the Crew on Tuesday night, but it was not enough as the Richmond Kickers upset Columbus 2-1 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals.

Matthew Delicate scored on a diving header in the 85th minute to give the Kickers the deciding goal at Crew Stadium.

Richmond, of the USL Pro League, broke through first on a 20-minute strike by Nozomi Hiroyama. Former Crew forward Stanley Nyazamba started the scoring play for Richmond by shoving Dejan Rusmir off the ball and spotted Hiroyama near the top left of the penalty area. Hiroyama curled a shot into the far upper netting from the top-left corner of the box.

Columbus evened the score when Grossman completed a six-pass sequence after receiving a terrific ball from Justin Meram in the 37th minute. Grossman and Meram were among five rookies in the starting lineup for the Crew.

The Crew is now 19-11-1 in Open Cup play and 11-5-1 at home.

Rookie draft choice Justin Meram scored two goals, but the Crew lost to the Houston Dynamo 4-2 in a very-physical, 120-minute exhibition in Phoenix.

Crew forward Andres Mendoza was ejected in the 18th minute, and two Dynamo players were issued red cards.

Before the game, Meram and fellow SuperDraft picks Rich Balchan, Cole Grossman and Bernardo Anor were signed to contracts.

The Crew have returned from Arizona and are preparing for a Champions League quarterfinal against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, February 22 at Crew Stadium.
