Two players who are trying to make the Cleveland Indians 25-man roster for the 2014 season, helped their causes with solid play yesterday.

Outfielder Jeff Francoeur went 2-for-3 highlighted by a 2-run single in the top of the first inning and shortstop Elliott Johnson collected three hits in the Tribe’s 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers in Surprise, Arizona.

The Indians had 11 hits and did not allow Rangers’ starting pitcher Colby Lewis out of the first inning.

The Texas Rangers were back in familiar surroundings in the south Dallas suburb of Arlington and were ready to start looking like American League champions.

Getting a lift from a pep talk by former President George W. Bush and owner Nolan Ryan’s ceremonial first pitch, the Rangers became the first team from Texas to win a World Series game, 4-2 over the Giants. They cut the deficit to 2 games to 1.

The Rangers behind the pitching of Colby Lewis, who shut the the suddenly high scoring Giants. He allowed five hits in 7 2/3 innings and struck out six.

The losing pitcher for the Giants was Jonathan Sanchez, a product of Ohio Dominican University, gave up four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Texas rookie Mitch Moreland hit an early-game three-run homer and Josh Hamilton later in the game hit a 426-foot homer which gave their 50-year franchise, their first World Series win.

ALCS GAME 6: Texas Rangers are the new American League Champions!

The Texas Rangers have done what the experts said they couldn’t do and that’s beat the New York Yankees.

The Rangers beat the Yankees to represent the American League in the World Series.

They dethroned their old nemesis.

Vladimir Guerrero drove in three runs; Nelson Cruz belted a long home run and the Rangers knocked out the New York Yankees 6-1 Friday night in Game 6 of the American League championship series to win 4 games to 2.

This was the biggest win in the franchise’s 50-year history.

Josh Hamilton was named the ALCS Most Valuable Player and starting pitcher Colby Lewis dominated the Yankees in his eight innings to pick up his second win of the series.

Colby Lewis tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts and Nelson Cruz hammered his American League leading sixth home run Wednesday night as the Texas Rangers beat Cleveland, 6-2.

Lewis (2-0) allowed two runs over 5 1-3 innings. He got the start in place of C.J. Wilson, who came down with food poisoning on Tuesday. Lewis made 37 pitches in the first inning, but got out of a bases-loaded jam and didn’t allow a hit until the third. He gave up three hits and four walks overall.

There was a crowd of 10,071 at Progressive Field, the lowest since the ballpark opened in 1994.
