John Carroll wins high-scoring affair with Capital, 85-80

The John Carroll University Blue Streaks held off the Capital Crusaders second half rally to win an OAC battle, 85-80 Saturday afternoon at the DeCarlo Athletic Center.

The Crusaders, having a down year at 9-12 overall, 6-8 in the OAC, rallied and got the deficit to 49-37 at the half and to one point in the final minute of the game.

Despite shooting 13-25 (.520) from the field in the second half, the Crusaders dropped their third straight game.

The Crusaders were led in scoring by Curt Geise with 19 points.

The top scorer for John Carroll (14-7, 8-6 OAC) was Danny Wallack with 14 points, followed by David Linane with 13. David Hendrickson (12) and Simon Kucharewicz (11) also reached double figures as the Blue Streaks won its third consecutive game.

John Carroll will visit Cleveland, Ohio area rival Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday night, February 12, for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.

 

Former Ohio State star Deshaun Thomas signs to play in France

Former Ohio State basketball player Deshaun Thomas has signed a one-year contract with JSF Nanterre, who won France’s Pro A playoffs last season.

Another former Buckeyes’ basketball player, David Lighty, a teammate of Thomas’ at OSU, played for the same team last year and was the MVP.

Lighty has moved on, as he did not re-sign with JSF Nanterre. The Cleveland, Ohio native has accepted an invitation from the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks to attend training camp and compete for a roster spot.

Nanterre, will not only defend its French title this coming season, but will also play against some strong competition in Europe’s Euroleague.

25-foot putt gives Ohio native Dufner PGA Tour win at Byron Nelson Championship

Jason Dufner made a 25-foot birdie putt on the file hole Sunday for a one-shot win at the Byron Nelson Championship. This is the second win in four weeks for 35-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio.

Dufner’s first PGA Tour win at New Orleans was on April 29, then he took a week off to get married.

The winning putt closed out a 3-under-par 67 for an 11-under-par 269 total, one ahead of Dicky Pride in the Irving, Texas tournament.

Pride, whose only PGA Tour win in a 20-year pro career came in 1994, was at 10 under with a par-saving 22-foot putt at #18 after hitting his drive into the water.

Dufner on verge of first win leading Zurich Classic

Jason Dufner is a 35-year-old native of Cleveland, Ohio.

He is a graduate of Auburn University and has been a pro golfer since 2000.

His only two wins have come on the Nationwide Tour.

He has been so close to wins on the PGA Tour but to no avail.

But on Friday, Dufner has moved to within another shot for his first PGA Tour win, shooting a 7-under-par 65 to reach 12 under par and is the second-round lead in the Zurich Classic in Avondale, Louisiana.

Following Dufner is Russell Knox (64), John Rollins (66) and Ken Duke (68) were tied for second place.

Luke Donald, the world’s second-ranked golfer was 6-under-par after shooting a 65.

Mother of OSU AD Gene Smith dies at 84

The mother of Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, Elizabeth D. Smith, died Friday afternoon in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio at age 84.

Mrs. Smith worked for 30 years as a licensed registered nurse at University Hospital in Cleveland before her retirement in 1988.

Gene Smith was in attendance at Ohio State’s game against Penn State on Saturday but was not as visible as he usually is at home games.
