Browns tag Mack as transition player; No franchise tag for Ward

The Cleveland Browns are one of the few NFL teams who rarely uses the transition tag on a player.

They’ve applied it only once in the 20-year existence of the tag and that was yesterday.

The special player is All-Pro center Alex Mack for the 2014 season.

The move means that Browns have five days to match any offer for him.

If he stays in Cleveland and plays under the transition tag, Mack would receive a guaranteed $10.039 million this season which is the average salary of the top 10 offensive lineman in the National Football League. Any team that signs him will not owe Cleveland any compensation.

The team also announced on Monday that it will not put the franchise tag on Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward. It is expected that he will test the free agent market.

Browns sign #1 pick Mingo to four-year deal

The Cleveland Browns new regime has signed their first draft choice.

The Browns announced that they have signed their number-1 draft choice, Barkevious Mingo, the sixth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft to a four-year contract.

The deal has a team option for a fifth year and is for more than $16 million.

The signing is timely as Mingo will not miss any part of training camp which starts on Thursday under new head coach Rob Chudzinski.

The 6’4, 240-pound Mingo played at Louisiana State University where in 40 games, he made 15 starts with 119 tackles and 15 sacks.

The wording in Mingo’s contract says that the Browns will not have to pay him the remainder of the deal if he is cut before it expires or he signs with another team.

Mingo will receive his entire signing bonus by December.

The Cleveland Browns have lost a fan favorite.

Free-agent kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs has signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Cribbs, who will turn 30 in June, had been a member of the Browns since being an undrafted free agent out of nearby Kent State University in 2005.

His eight kickoff returns for touchdowns are tied for the most in NFL history with Leon Washington.

The 6’1, 215-pound Cribbs is a 3-time Pro Bowler and 2-time All-Pro. He was the 2009 NFL Special Teams Player of the Year.

His career totals stack up this way:

107 receptions, 1,161 receiving yards, 12,169 return yards and 20 total touchdowns.

This coming Sunday’s NFL game will mark the 78th of the Battle of Ohio, between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals swept the Browns in 2011, 27-17 and 23-20 to take their largest lead in the series to date at 41-36.

Cincinnati enters the game having won three games in a row against the Browns and six of the last seven. The Bengals have also protected their home by winning seven of the last eight Battle of Ohio games played at Paul Brown Stadium.

The biggest lead in the series by the Browns was 6-1 after the first meeting of the series in the 1973 season. The Bengals came back to even things up at 6-6 with a five-game winning streak, which is their longest in the series so far.

Neither team has led the series by six games but Cincinnati has the chance to do that on Sunday.

Eagles QB Vick says he’ll be ready for opener

Even with injured ribs, three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick told reporters that he is “doing good. feeling better,” and that there is no reason why he won’t be ready for the opening game of the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles visit the Cleveland Browns in Week number 1 and that is the target date Vick is shooting for.

His backup at quarterback is Nick Foles.

Foles is a 23-year-old rookie out of Arizona. The 6’5, 243-pounder was a third round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, 88th pick overall.
